rust in fuel tank

 :?: my '69 280 SL has not been driven a lot lately.(been in storeage)  drained the fuel tank and noticed a bit of rust.  the tank is solid, just some surface rust inside.  is that anything to be concerned with?  seems to run a bit rough after warming up.  would using unleaded regular cause bad performance?  put in new fuel filter.

George,

I see this is your first post, welcome to the Group!  The Search feature is a very good tool in this forum.  It's link is at the top right corner of the screen.  You could search on a couple key words like "fuel rust" and see what you get.

From what I've been told and read on this forum, there are good products to clean the rust from your fuel tank and then seal it to prevent further rust.  Maybe search on "tank seal"?  There is a mesh screen inside the tank itself that keeps most rust out of the fuel system.  Secondly, there is another mesh screen inside the electric fuel pump itself which is the second line of defence in keeping rust from damaging the fuel system.  Keep in mind that these are screens, like screen doors, not filters, like paper elements.  These only block the large particles.  Finally, you have the large paper filter up in the engine bay.  This is the last line of defense, protecting the high precision fuel injector pump and the fuel injectors them selves.  If this filter, or the housing, appears to have rust in it, then you should take action.

Use the Search tool to find the thread called "Fuel tank tour" and another one called "injection pump tour" and you will learn as much as we did.

Yes, that's the typical fuel for these cars; high octane (octaine?) unleaded.

Rodd, the fuel tank tour was is amazingly informative!!  I was just saying to a friend the other day that I wish I could see how the inside of the tank was configured.  Perfect timing.  I think Hauser is right.  Premium may make all the difference.  For now I'm not going to be concerned with the rust. I have been told that coating the inside could seal up lines and such.  I would think that tanks on all older cars have to have some rust.  Actually I cleaned the tank a couple of years ago with acid.  I may just be getting preoccupied with the tank.  Seems to me that fuel may be the cause of running rough after warming up.  Put in new cap,rotor,points,condenser,plugs and wires.  Tried a substitute coil also.
