chrome cover on door, front top
« on: August 15, 2014, 08:23:39 »
Hello everyone,
I noticed a few screws are missing on my chrome cover. To identify the part, I looked at the SLS website, and on the page for "Door," this is the piece labelled 90. They give the part number as A1137280321, if that helps.

Presuming nothing else is wrong, all I want to know is whether the correct screws are available for this. If it's just a question of finding any old thing that fits, I can handle that. But if we're talking about a special screw for some reason, I'd like to know about it.

Hi Peter,
look at the picture in my reply #4 here: http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=14342.msg97694#msg97694
I believe it lists the screws that you need. Correct?

Just to clarify, the part number you are referencing is for the large curved chrome piece, not the curved channel piece.  In your picture, the part number corresponds to the chrome piece that has nice screws in it.  Are you looking for the screws to replace the rusty screws in your photo (on the channel piece) or the not rust screws for the curvey flat piece?

In other words, I'm not sure if you are looking for the screws for part number 354 in the attached picture or part number 300 in the attached picture.  Regardless, EPC says they use the same screw.  See attached parts list for part number.

Hi Scott and everyone,
it's the "nice screws" that I'm thinking about. Some are missing on my driver's side door, while the rusty ones are all present and accounted for :-)

In your diagram, the trim piece is indeed # 354, called "ornamental cover." In the link Alfred provided, I guess it's the screws themselves that have index # 117.

(One of the challenges with the forum is that I couldn't think of how to search for a thread about this topic. "Thanks all!" never would have occurred to me as a search term.)

Do you think it's worth it, getting a screw kit with dozens of screws in it? Just to have them at hand.

Unless the screws are separated and numbered using MB numbers, I wouldn't want the kit.  It's confusing enough using EPC part numbers.   I'm already in the situation where it's difficult to figure out which screws that I have ordered in the past were for which items.

Hi Peter,

If you are just replacing a few missing chrome screws here and there I would just get the specfic screws missing.
If you are doing total nuts and bolts restorations some DIN based screw kits are useful to have at hand.
But then its very useful to know a little bit about the DIN numbers and what they mean.
The EPC will become a lot less confusing regarding DIN parts.
BTW the screws you need are found on the door chrome trim on C124 coupes as well, so I always grab a handful
If I see them at a junkyard.
For fastening screws based on DIN numbers learning the difference between DIN 7981, 7982 and 7983 is a good
start.

That is very interesting.  Are you saying that "Mercedes" part number N 007983 002203 is a DIN 7983 (Phillips Oval Head Sheet Metal Screw) and that the 002 and 203 are boing to be the Mx.x diameter and the length?  Are all EPC parts that begin with "N" really DIN numbers?

thanks so much!

Yes, N 007983 = DIN 7983 just as N 007981 = DIN 7981.
And no, 002203 cannot be directly translated into diameter and length. Mercedes made sure that owners and service stations could not just go to a hardware store and by inexpensive screws , nooooo you have to buy them with a 500% mark up from a dealer!  :o
Seriously, Mercedes provided two sets of books, (1) a DIN survey list that shows a drawing of the part and indicates what is is, e.g. a nut, a bold, a clamp, etc., and (2) a code list that translates the MB Norm number into a description of size, material, and surface treatment, etc.
Here are copies of what these lists look like. Note that the Code List = Schlüssel-Liste Nr. 7, that means that there are many more, I believe it went up to Nr. 10 and having just one is often not enough. There are ways to get your hands on number 7 but I prefer not to describe this publicly.

Yes Peter, because you will always need to replace one here and there.
The most problematic ones are  sheet metal screws (DIN 7981, 7982, 7983) because it is very difficult to find them in 'metric', that is, DIN dimensions and in stainless steel (as a substitute for chrome) in the USA and probably also in Canada. I use this on-line store in Germany to (a) find available dimensions and (b) accumulate enough to make shipping costs bearable:
https://online-schrauben.de/shop/ (I believe you read German, so you can search around a bit).
Another excellent source is George's web site; he lists the dimensions of many screws that we are dealing with for keeping our cars running:
http://www.authenticclassics.com/Chrome-Hardware-Listing-for-230SL-250SL-280SL-p/113ch-chrome-hw-display-page.htm
Another rich source for chrome screws is Andreas Schiek's in Germany: http://www.chromschrauben24.de/ - he also has an eBay shop: http://stores.ebay.com/chromschrauben?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

Considering the price difference between chromed screws and stainless steel screws it pays to have an assortment of the latter at hand.

What?   ???    A #4 screw does not match any metric DIN screw, the diameter is different and so is the screw pitch!!
Of course if your doors were already screwed up  - pun intended - by the previous owner putting in wrong screws then it does not matter.
For those who want stainless steel SAE screws here is another great source: http://www.totallystainless.com/totally.html
