Pagoda at 230 Km/h (144 mph)!
« on: August 30, 2004, 11:54:21 »
Hi friends,
I found this picture (100 Kb) of a W113 driving at 230 Km/h (144 mph) [:0]: http://www.mercedes500.de/galerie_vollgas/230kmh-113-pagode.jpg
In the same website (mainly about S-Class W126), there are more pictures of MB cars at full speed... Ahh, those German highways without speed limit [:p]: http://www.mercedes500.de/galerie_vollgas.html

I think the speedometer gets increasingly inaccurate as you go faster, so I highly doubt the driver is traveling a true 140+ MPH.
Nonetheless, I will attempt this later today on the FDR Drive here in Manhattan and let everyone know the results. ;)

I think it is impossible to go 230 kph and have the engine rev at only 5,100. Unless the car is equipped with an altogether different (V8?) engine.

I have doubts as to the accuracy of this photo.  If this car is in fact going at the indicated speed of 230Kmh the outside surroundings would be a complete blur unless the phographer was using a high speed shutter.

I think the picture is real... it would not make sense to include "photoshop" pictures in a gallery like that...
But I thought the same about the revs. Maybe this Pagoda is one of the Mechatronic Pagodas with a transplanted MB 320 engine (V6 - 218 HP) engine and current automatic gearbox... (Do you remember? We saw it in the Techno Classica Essen)... because the standard gearboxes of the Pagodas have shorter ratios...
Anyway, it's a funny picture!  8)

Hello Albert & others,
I don't think it is real. As Cees already mentioned, you don't go with 230 km/h at 5100 revs. The speedo is not original, the numbers go up to 240 but not 220 km (Euro speedo). The speedo must be from the W111 3.5 I assume. There the rear axle ratio is completely different which is why the speedo most likely shows incorrect numbers.
It's fake.

Hi Achim,
Maybe it's real. I think this car is one of the Pagodas "by Mechatronik" ( http://www.mechatronik-gmbh.de/english/e_msl.html ). This German company put current MB V6 engines (3.200cc) and different gearboxes/rear axle ratios in the Pagoda, and they have two versions (MSL 320 / 224 HP / 225 km/h - MSL Sport R / 280 HP / >230 km/h) able to reach such speed in the speedo. Mechatronik also changes the speedo of these special Pagodas (up to 240 Km/h, as you can see in this picture from their site), in order to adapt it to the new performances.

Something looks funny....
The gauges between the dials. I have gas, oil pressure and temp
I can see gas, and assume temp
But the last one looks nothing like my pressure gauge
And one other minor item
Would you want to be the photographer? ;)

I think the lower-left-corner gauge is in fact the oil pressure one Tosh. Looks like it is pegged to 'full' as it should be (certainly at that speed!)
