Hi all
My name is Miles and I've been a member for a while but have only ever been a lurker.

I am based in Southend on Sea, Essex, UK

My much loved 1966 230sl was stolen in the early hours of this morning (18.10.2014). It was taken from my locked garage (they cropped the padlock) and just driven away. There was 2 guys who seemed to know that my car was there and knew exactly what to do to take it. the police was called by witnesses whilst they were still opening the doors. They were gone by the time the police arrived.

I'm assuming that it was stolen to order and just thought that forum memebers in the south east of the UK might like to know.

Miles,

Very sad to hear.  This must be the 3rd or 4th UK Pagoda reported stolen on this website in just the past few months.  Something strange going on.  Really feel for you.

Absolutely gutted for you Mylo.  The car looks beautiful.  I really hope somehow you can get it back intact.  What the hell is going on here?  Wouldn't these cars be incredibly hard to resell?

Sorry to hear it, hope your fine police force can find it before it is too late. Also, hope your insurance will compensate you should they fail to recover it.

Makes one think to disable several devices to make it harder for a thief to drive away before the Police arrives ... like

the simple device to isolate the battery

http://www.amazon.ca/NOCO-SW5400S-210-Amp-Heavy-Duty-Disconnect/dp/B00DNU3MKO/ref=sr_1_3/187-6534304-1602748?ie=UTF8&qid=1413663346&sr=8-3&keywords=battery+disconnect+switch

or a GPS Tracker

http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/product/brickhouse+hct+pro+plus.do?sortby=bestSellers

Or a Wheel Immobilizer

http://www.wctproducts.com/products/immobilizers/pb-series-heavy-duty-immobilizer.php

It would at least make it harder for the thief and easier for the police to track, any other suggestions out there?

Very sad news.
If the crooks have gone to the trouble of cropping the lock on a garage then they obviously knew the car was in there and other security devices are unlikely to stop them.
At my garage my staff have strict instructions to NEVER leave a pagoda outside over night and always block the access to the garage with another less valuable car.
I have also considered installing hydraulic bollards in the ground.

The more I see these types of posts and the more that the values go beyond the pale, the more I am thinking it is time to fit an alarm, hidden dead switch and tracker.

Very sad news to hear, These cars must defiantly being stolen to order and maybe stripped down for spare parts as they are worth lots of money alone. I cannot see how anyone can export these cars without Logbook as customs require this as paperwork and also inspect car to make sure it corresponds with vin plate ect. My insurance company insist that i have cat1 alarm system fitted with battery cut off before they even think of insuring my car. I have to even send them the certificate of installation as proof. Hope there is a happy ending to this story. My advice to anyone owning one of these cars is defiantly get it alarmed with a cat1 and battery cut out as this is happening to much nowadays.

Today I was sent a link to an article from my local paper in April this year that is about a guy having his 280sl stolen. The descriptions and M.O sound very similar to how mine was stolen. I definitely think it was stolen to order now.

You do have this website in order to gather at least 3 or 4 of the UK victims of these thefts.  At minimum you may be able to come together and see if there is any common denominator with these "serial thefts" --- common parts supplier, common repair shop, etc.      How are they finding these cars --- all not too far from each other?

I would doubt that this website is the common-link as most members do not list their full names.

If you do find a common denominator, it would sure shake things up.

I'm sure this site isn't a common link. I haven't posted much and I'm very aware of sharing too much online.
The common thread in my case is that the other car that was stolen was kept in a locked garage away from the owners house as was mine. The thieves were a man and a woman in both cases and both cars were stolen a mile apart.

I'm very sorry for your loss after having gone through the same experience three times on two different Pagodas I've owned and driven in the Los Angeles area. They generally only get stolen in the nicer areas of town. The thieves follow you home when they spot you on the streets or maybe they answer for sale ads and here they seem to be stealing them by quickly hooking them to the back of a tow truck so that your alarm system won't even be triggered. They generally have them completely stripped of all valuable parts within a few hours and then dump the stripped cars on a desolated street... Mine have always been recovered stripped with a week and I've heard of many more similar stories around here. These are generally the same individuals stealing these cars and once they waited for a year or two when I had finally pieced my car together again from parts I purchased on Ebay and within a week they came back one night when I was forced to park my car on a quiet residential street, in my driveway and the stole only the large front chrome grill. Several months later I spotted that grill for sale on Ebay and I actually tracked down the guy and made him give me the grill back. L.A. police is useless in such endeavors. I believe some of the thieves ended up in jail as did the guys who stole John Travolta's car in broad daylight as he was stopping into a Jaguar dealer on Santa Monica Blvd., but unfortunately the value and good condition of the parts around here make these cars targets for low-lives who buy stripped cars at insurance auctions and use the parts to put together their cars for a large profit... Good luck to you. My Pagoda has your same DB 906 color. My favorite...

I have lowjack on mine with a movement sensor.  If my keys arent in the car, it triggers lojack to call, text, and email me and let me know the car has been moved.  For about $1k its worth a lot of piece of mind as this car has been stolen once and recovered already.

I also have one of these:  http://amzn.com/B006EH9WUC   Its good for storing the car for a while and preventing the battery from dying.  If you were to remove the key all together... it would also slow an unprepared thief down if not stop them all together.

Best luck in recovering yours!

The problem is that an alarm doesn't help much if they come and pick up the car with a tow truck. I was within ear shot of my car one time they stole it, but since the car doesn't get bumped or opened up while they pick it up, the alarm doesn't go off even though the engine was disabled. Also, in an underground shopping mall garage the Lojack signal wouldn't make it out of the garage and you would never know your car has been stolen. I've talked to many manufacturers and they all have this same design flaw. Plus Lojack is tied in with the police here in Los Angeles, so you'd have to count on them following the car once the signal was received. When I really want to discourage thieves from stealing it, I simply loosen and remove 4 of the 5 wheel bolts on one wheel. Although I can just picture them dragging my Pagoda down the street, sparks flying. I wonder if Gull Wings were getting stolen a lot in the 1970s...

Salvatore. Did you catch the guys who stole it or did they leave it waiting on an abandoned street?...

Thanks for the words of support.
After much discussion with my insurance company they have finally settled and paid me out (4 weeks after it was stolen!)

mylo, sorry for the three year delay on answering this! Apparently I forgot to subscribe, but I was wandering today and noticed my mistake, hopefully you're still around!

Fortunately, the first time the car was stolen it was recovered.  This was in LA in the back when my parents owned the car and before I was born.  Unfortunately, the thieves had stripped most of the cars best parts: chrome, interior, seats, half the engine, etc...  What was left was the frame and basically all the electrical/body panels.  Insurance paid to have it fully rebuilt at the time.

The second theft attempt didn't get that far.  My mom used the car as her daily driver and used to frequent a bowling alley on sundays for her league.  Everyone knew my mom and her car and one evening when the owner of the bowling alley went outside to smoke, he saw two guys in the car trying to jimmy the ignition.  He shouted at them to get out of her car, they told him to mind his own business and so he (the owner of the bowling alley) ran inside to tell my mom/call the police/and get his baseball bat.  He ran back outside with my mom to find the two would-be thieves halfway down the parking lot trying to push-start the engine.  They abandoned the attempt and ran off into the night.  Again, insurance paid to replace the ignition and other assorted parts they damaged in the failed theft.

There was a third, more brazen attempt in a parking lot a few years ago, but that also failed once they noticed the lo-jack on my keys.

Someone messed with a friends car many years ago and it wouldn't start.  It took me quite q while to realize they had switched the center ignition lead (coil wire) and one of the spark leads.  The car sounded like it wanted to start but it was only firing one spark plug. Whenever I park my car somewhere questionable I pop the hood and switch the leads.

Or just switch the fuel fuse with a broken one :)

They never start the car.

All of this is sad of course but without a VIN there's little anyone here can do except offer support. Once a car is stolen, giving up the VIN might help someone in a shop to spot your car or at least point out to the current ( probably innocent, possibly not ) owner that it's hot. If I'm wrong here, maybe someone can point out why.
