Does anyone know if the 230 style rear handles come Lf and Rt like the 280? I have one with a 6021 number inside.

Yes, Clayton...,

The hardtop handles are different, left & right side. Not interchangable.
Same on 230, 250 & 280.

You need to find the (missing) correct one.

Good luck,

I was afraid of that. Any hints on how to tell the difference on the early style?

I was curious about this so I went to the parts books to see what they had typed out.

The early 230 SL book (Cat A) indicates the following part numbers for the handle:

Left - 113 790 01 68
Right - 113 790 02 68

In the 230 SL Cat B (10097 dated from Nov 1964) the numbers :

Left 113 790 05 68
Right 113 790 06 68

There is a footnote which states "use up existing stock, rework required"

The 230 SL Cat C has the information shown above, but no footnote. So the stock must have been used up when that book was printed??

From then on the part numbers that I could find were the second ones with the 05/06 - The early 250 SL parts book shows the part numbers with the 05/06.

Interestingly, the 280 SL part books (the ones I have) do not even have a listing/table/group for the hardtop! Even the small catalogs don't have the hardtop. That is a bit confusing to say the least.

I also have a parts substitution book (14049) dated July 1972. There is a listing of the old part number (01/02) with the replacement being the 05/06.
