greasing
« on: January 16, 2015, 15:39:12 »
Just doing the greasing on my 66. 230, the owners manual shows three grease nipples on the drive shaft
I can only see two ,the manual shows one at the front and two at the rear, the one in the carrier is accessible
through a small port in the carrier, mine has the port but no nipple or provision for it,was it omitted on some cars.
I have done 19 in total  ;D. Cheers .Mike.

If you are talking about the center bearing, the Mercedes replacement is a sealed bearing and does not require maintenence. Maybe yours has already been replaced?

I am not aware that the shaft needs to be greased, however the front suspension needs greasing at several points, in particular, the kingpin.

One grease point for sure is on the front near the flange. Lubes the self centering ball. It has a grease fitting on one end and then and check valve 180* away. The check valve squirts grease out when there is adequate grease in the cavity. This is very often neglected. When I greased my W111 for the first time, I think I put 20 pumps into it.

Another is the center bearing. If it has been replaced, it may use a sealed bearing that does not need additional lube. Don't forget about these grease points and they are on the chart.

It is also possible that the U joints need greasing if they were replaced with ones requiring that.
