Camshaft: difference between a 84 and a 76?

I'm rebuilding the head on my '65 230Sl and have a 84 cam that needs to be replaced as too pitted. I see a 76 cam also fits there. When looking at the specs for both cams, I can't see a difference. Is there one?

These are both correct for a 230SL. I believe the 84 is a latter design. Improvements most likely were made in material used and/or oil distribution. I know the oil groove configuration is different in the later cam. Either one should give you the same performance.  The later may be a bit more durable.

Sorry JP,I have none, these are a little scarce. Try Dan C., SL Tech, Bud's, K&K, Dave Gallon,SLS or some other suppliers  on the list. You can also do a "wanted" post on this forum.

Always check with the MB dealership first if a part is still

a) available
b) parts number correct or changed
c) price
d) availablilty.

Then, and only then you can decide on your own where to get the part, from Bud's, KK or elsewhere if you dislike the official dealership.

But please do your homework and check first with MB (best is with Classic Center in Irivine, CA). It's well worth the effort.

Many of the independent sellers request ridiculous prices or at least the corret MB factory list prices for an OEM MB part.
Often, the CC can provide you a discount.

The 230 camshaft A180 051 8401 is still available from the factory.
Here is the current price (as of 20 Jan 2015), maybe a bit more expensive tomorrow.
Do a conversion from € into $$, add a bit of surplus because of transcontinental shipment, then you know what the part is roughly worth in the States.

thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
You are right in checking first with MB.
It's that my experience with anything related to this car has been horribly expensive when from MB and I've taken the habit of not even consulting them anymore.
I will for the parts to rebuild my engine, if only for comparison purpose.
