Harry:
The two planes in the pictures (Middle and left) are spitfires. You can see the British Emblem also the round cockpit window. The lead plane might be a version of the spitfires that I am not familiar with.
Also the plane on the opposite page should be a US Navy Hellcat Dive Bomber.

Hi Tom,

The first plane in the group of three is a Hawker Hurricane.

It's a British fighter built for the Royal Air Force during the late 1930's & into the 1940's. It also starred in the Battle of Britain.

Whilst not as famous as the Supermarine Spitfire, (because of less performance, fire power etc.I guess), it nonetheless was a mainstay of the RAF during the war.

cheers

You can find loads of great pictures of the aircraft that flew if you go to various websites. The two Lancaster bombers flying in formation was the real crowning event. Search  "Goodwood 2014" photo collections. And yes Harry, the sound of all those V12 Merlin turbocharged running at high thottle was indeed great for us petrolheads... :D

Sorry to go on a tangent, but I figure there's many of us interested in this, too: one of those last 2 flying Lancasters is based in Hamilton, Ontario, just an hour or so east of London. As the historic tour in the UK this past summer went on, it developed some engine troubles that made it to the news media. What didn't get so widely reported was that the mechanics were able to find spares in the UK and the Lanc made it back to Canada safely.

I know Mike, yours will arrive in the coming week, sometimes the post can be very slow. Hang in there :)

Mine arrived on Saturday, March 7. I should note--and a shout out to Ray Hays--that the magazine is now being mailed at a discount via presort standard mail. Saves a bit on postage...last time was with stamps! Progress, progress progress...!!! :)

Got my copy yesterday here in Italy. I appreciated a lot the report and pictures related to the "suspension system". Even those related to w113.  ;D ;D ;D
