Mystery Panel

I removed the spare tire from the trunk of my newly acquired 280SL to see what surprises I might find and discovered the panel shown in the photo.
It is cardboard with foam backing and the materials match other pieces on each side of the trunk plus a piece under the dash on the passenger side.
The only place it might seem to belong is under the dash on the drivers side since there is no panel on that side.
If this is where it goes I can't seem to orient it so it will to fit.

No mystery, that is where it goes. The portion between the pedals tore off long ago, same as yours.

Very interesting. I'm a bit surprised that we have pieces of cardboard as original parts of our Pagodas, foam-backed or not. Can anyone confirm that there are exactly 4 pieces of cardboard that belong? Or others? And when someone does a "complete restoration," how do they replace these cardboard pieces? Do concours judges check for these? (Not that that will ever apply to me.)

Only three pieces fit under the dash, left, center, and right that I am aware of. At least that is the case for my car.

Yes there are three. I am not surprised that only a few lucky cars still have them fully in tact. They get brittle, especially around the fasteners, and I think many times mechanics/owners gave up putting them back as its tricky. Mine were really shot and one side non-existent. I eventually undertook to make my own -- which turned out fine (not concourse level but decent). There is a long thread about how I did this here, however some of the useful photos for templates are gone.

What about in the trunk? Is there supposed to be one on each side?

Correct. 
Spare wheel well-230ies (until serial 007204) had only one cardboard piece in the trunk - on the right side, not on the left behind the spare wheel.

Can be made of a cardboard panel by the meter. Common sources (SLS, K&K, Bud's) should stock them. Just ask.

Is this the set of pieces K&K calls "cover under dash"? Part # 113-682-00-17
I remember looking at that in the drawing and wondering what it was, not realizing it was cardboard/foam. Now I know.
Can't find the trunk pieces in K&K's online catalog. Which is the pieces I need soon, since it's my tail clip that's being rebuilt right now.

they do sell the panel but it is hidden in the display and the left and right panel refer to the same image: http://www.kkmfg.com/catalog_loader.php?page=113/113upholstery.svg
Search the parts list window on the right for" "trunk side cover": 113 690 00 35.  For $95 each you might think about making them.

Thanks for all the comments that helped me identify this panel.
I still don't see where the part between the pedals is gone since it looks like there is black dye or paint on all the edges.
All the previous photos have expired so I am still a little puzzled on this point.
Regardless it will be easy to reinstall now that I know where it goes.
