Oil filter Copper O Ring???
« on: March 29, 2015, 18:41:26 »
I bought a new oil filter and it came with two felt washers, two steel washers, one copper washer and a 40mm copper O ring.
One washer matched up with the Oil filter bolt and one matched up with the drain plug on the Oil cooler tank but the other one did not match up with my oil pan drain plug.
I reused the old one and all is OK.
What is the location of the 40mm copper O ring?
I can't find any reasonable location.
The kit came with a felt washer for each end of the filter that I installed.
The rubber seal at the end inside the canister was still in tact and was held in place with a keeper so I left it alone.
Could anyone comment on where I put the parts and the purpose of the copper O Ring that is lying on my workbench?
thx

I believe this is the crush seal for the oil drain plug. Take a look at my parts list: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Engine/Lubrication
Make sure you replace the upper seal ring - #37 in the 230SL list, or #2 for the 280SL oil canister picture.

The large copper washer is used with oil pans that have the large plug that takes a large allen wrench.  If you have the replacement pan with the plug with 13 mm hex head, you need to find your own crush washer because it doesn't come with the oil filter kit.

I think PN for the washer is N007603 012110 (12 x 17 mm).

What brand filter are you using.  Is the drain plug on your oil pan a 17mm hex bolt head or is it a 14mm allen type. Otherwise you may have the latest M130 oil pan which uses the 13mm hex bolt head drain plug.  In this case you will use a small crush washer and not use the larger one. Most important is to make sure that the inner upper seal is still hanging on the neck in the filter housing. If this is gone your engine oil is not being filtered.

I did some work for an authorized MB dealer last week. The dealership had been in the family since 1968.The owner of the dealership had a very nice collection of vintage Mercedes cars.  His cars were always serviced in their shop. Well, I checked the filter housing, guess what? The upper filter seal was gone.  It's very important to check for this part. It is often missing, no mater who serviced or owned the cars.

Some replacement oil filter brands are 3mm shorter than the original oil filters and will not seal to filter the oil.  There is usually not any felt washers with the oil filter.  I am wondering if you have a fuel filter?

Just for reference, My '60 W128 220SE has that large oil drain plug. It uses that large copper crush ring. My '68 W111 uses the smaller copper seal ring for the oil pan. I do not believe that the MB kits include the extra oil cooler seal ring and you have to get that separately. The oil filter kit is the same number for the W128 and it is for the W111 (#000 180 00 09). Thus, they include both oil pan seal rings.

PS. Watch out when you remove the large oil pan drain plug! A massive amount of oil will come out all of a sudden.  :o

I had a "Senior Moment".
The felt seals were on the fuel filter that I also replaced.

Yes, fuel filters have a felt seal or thick washer if you prefer, at each end. It slips over the bottom tube when you insert the filter in the canister and the top one fits inside the cover as you tighten it up.

All the filters i've bought since owning Pagodas have these felt washers as part of the filter. But then, I only buy Mann or Mahle.
I was just curious about the loose felt washers.
