The 100 Coolest Cars
« on: September 20, 2004, 11:56:28 »
The latest issue of Automobile Magazine (October issue) has rated the 100 coolest cars ever.

I am very sad to report that our beloved Pagoda did not make the list. :(

"Car enthusiasts love to sit around drinking beer and arguing the merits of their favorite vehicles.  Ultimately, what we all want to determine is: What's cool?  We polled our staff and contributors, whose prejudices have resulted in a fascinating take on the nature of automobile coolness.  We whittled their selections down to a highly subjective list of the 100 Coolest Cars, presented here in descending order.  Let the arguments begin!" OK. Put a W113 next to No. 73 on the list, a Mazda Miata and tell me which is cooler. I've got to think that 12 of every 10 people would pick the Pagoda. And tell me the Mini Cooper didn't make this list twice at Nos. 67 & 85???

Mini-Cooper # 67 is the original and # 85 is the new Coopper.  I know this just doesn't make sense that the Pagoda did not make the list.

We should send letters to the editor and express our feelings.

Well, there were four Mercedes-Benz models on the list altogether, although only one in the top ten - or even 20!  Jaguar had two in the top ten and three in the top 20, BMW and Citroen had two in the top 20 (can you believe Citroen almost had two in the top ten?).  Overall I'd say that they hit most of the high spots, but it was disappointing not to find any version of the Pagoda on the list and even more surprising not to find any model of M.G. on the list!  Some people still need further education about cool...

Who did this list: The editor, the readers? Ummm, a Chevrolet Corvette on the top of the list... this doesn't sound very accurate...

Take # 39 for example a 1983 VW GTI.  It was a nice car when it was new but where is it today?  It's a piece of crap!  There is no way in hell that this car has stood the test of time like our 113's!  I think these guys were smoking some kind of wacky weed when they conjured up this list.

If the date were April 1st I would have pulled quite a prank here.  But gentlemen I kid you not.  This is an outrage for all Pagoda owners!

When I went to one of the last local Cruise nights a couple of weeks ago; there was one 190SL, a 560SL and my 280SL.  Most of the other  cars were rods and other cars from the 50's and 60's.  I really got very few lookers and most just glanced as they walked by.  I do not think enough car nuts know about our cars.  I did have some good comments from the few who even know about the Pagoda.  We just have to educate them better.

Well, what's the definition of cool? In my view (but I am an old fart) cool is PJ Diddy, Sean Combs and the new Dodge funeral car in red. But to call a Mozart symphony, Sophia Loren or a W113 "cool" would be an insult.

Er, who cares?  There'a quite a few laughable cars on the list, and the fact that "we" were not included all adds to the allure and mystique of our beloved 113.  It is as the local church's sign says--If you want to get nowhere, follow the crowd.

We should be blessed that we were not on that list...what the heck do they know anyway.  Personally I always thought Corvettes were driven by big men with small...well you get the idea.  Jeep CJ?  Now we know the list is not to be taken seriously.  But it's a Jeep thing and I wouldn't understand, right?  Anything Citroen cool?  Exotic perhaps...peculiar, certainly.  But cool, non!

(If I'm not mistaken, I think the definition of "cool" is having something that's NOT on everybody's list.)

It's all subjective anyway... For those of you who manage to catch the BBC Top Gear program you may of noted Mr Clarkson's cool wall. Some of his choices are alittle whacky at the best of times

Now if the subject was "iconic" rather than "cool" then the list would be very different... Suggestions anyone?

Me
1st Citroen DS 1959 - a design classic
2nd original mini - the design package shame they never made any money!
3rd probably the 1st Range Rover - how to combine agriculture and Surrey in one (Iowa and NYC) :)
4th Audi Quattro - took the rally world by storm, ugly but did the job, many imitators out there.

Agree... if there is a remarkable Golf GTI it's the first one: the MKI from 1976 ( http://perso.wanadoo.fr/golfgti1/ ), and not the MKII from 1983. Another reason to say that this list is not very trustworthy...

This Cool car poll was almost as amusing as the one I mentioned in my reply to the "how long have you had your pagoda" thread.

My car is just a driver and it is a third car so I let my 3 kids drive it to high school for their junior and senior years. They had to get there for 6:15 AM for marching band and didn't get out until 6:30 PM because of water polo, swim team and track practice so it worked out pretty well. My youngest helped me paint, redo the interior and rebuild the suspension (including the 3.27 rear end transplant) during the summer before his senior year so it looked almost like a show car when he had it.

When the student newspaper announced a cool car contest he was sure that our classic red convertible would win hands down.
In the poll, however, the Pagoda did not make the top five. When he and his friends inquired as to why, the judges explained that it was not eligible because they thought it was a replica car. The winner of the contest had a Honda Accord coupe and was awarded the prize because of extensive modifications to the car (he had installed a blinking license plate, some purple lights under the car and one of those big round exhaust tips that he got at Auto Zone! They reasoned that with the skill required to make those modifications, he was a real automobile enthusiast.

As to the question of why they thought that a "Pagoda" was a replica car, the explanation was that all of the real cars that any of the judges knew about had power windows, automatic transmission, power tops and air conditioning. They just figured that our 230 Sl was something put together by a chop shop.
So it is not surprising at all that the Pagoda did not make the top 100. Maybe the voters in the poll were not even alive when the last Pagoda rolled off the line.

Tom, thanks for sharing your great story.

I have three boys and they have split opinions on the Pagoda.  I believe my biggest fan is my 6 year old.  He's always asking if we can go in the "cool" car.  His opinions were quite different when we got the Honda Odyssey with the DVD entertainment center.  Then ALL cars were judged on if they had a DVD system in it.  But I've got him on track again.  We play a game where the object is to look for the 3 pointed star.

One day we were picking up take out from the local Outback Steakhouse when I spotted an SLK32 and I said to my son that's a sweet car.  His reply was "That's a sweet ass car."  Out of the mouths of babes...  Kids really do come up with the darndest things.

Great sharing stories with you!
