Importing a Pagoda from Canada to US

I am looking to import a Pagoda from Canada to the USA (Illinois) I was intending on just driving it over the border myself , no use of a importer.  I was wondering if anyone has done this?
I have been researching and I think I need a EPA form OMB 2060-0095 with the exempt box code E checked
and a DOT form 2127-0002 form with exempt box #1 checked. 
how does this work at the US border?  It will be titled in Illinois so no extra emmision.

Twice I've imported cars into Canada form the States. The process is not too complicated and I had a broker =who took care of the paperwork. Cost is cheap and well worth it. I know that Customs have to have copy of the registration in hand 72 hours before you cross the border at the SPECIFIC station where you sent your documents.
They do this to make sure you are not taking a stolen car out of the country.
Because you are importing a vintage car, things are also simpler.
Once again, this is my experience importing cars into Canada and I'm sure things are not exactly the same the other way around. But it,s done frequently, so it can't be such a big deal.

I did not do this, i.e. the previous owner brought the car to Canada before I bought it officially. When I took my car to the customs office in Canada, they didn't ask me anything about how the car left the U.S.A. Same with the Ontario ministry office when I registered the car.

However. . . I have not taken the car across the border since then. I hope no one from the NSA monitors this thread.

If the PO imported the car into Canada and you were able to have it inspected and registered, then it had to have been done the right way. You are now saying you want to export the car back into the USA and I would consult with a broker familiar with this process. It may very well be different tans importing into Canada form USA.

I think it's fairly straight forward. You need the signed title, a bill of sale, and I would insist on having the UVIP ( used vehicle indentification package ) which lists the current and any previous owners. It will also tell you if the car has any liens on it. If the seller, the title and the UVIP don't match up, I'd be asking a few questions.
 Canadian government, be it Ontario or other Province, really doesn't care where the car goes. They only collect taxes when the car is plated. If you buy from a dealer you may end up paying 5% GST at point of sale. If you buy privately, there should be no taxes.
This being a German car, you may have some sort of duty to pay at US customs but with 20% +  exchange rate you should be able to do OK with your sale. I would place insurance on the car from the moment you buy it. Some people used to buy a car, put insurance on it, and then throw thier own plates on it for a drive to the border. I wouldn't do that for a whole host of good reasons. You're safest bet is to trailer it to and through the border. With the harmonized system that is now in effect between Canada and the USA, you can't get away with anything.

Oh, and don't bring any undeclared guns with you. You will be arrested.
