Blaupunkt Radio Wiring

A good friend of mine recently gave me a "period" radio ( Thanks DZ!).

It is a "Blaupunkt Auto Radio" with the following information:
KDB 971-803
Frankfurt US (S)
Z 64 8374

Can anyone email me the wiring diagram for this unit?  Here are my questions:
1.  I see that the yellow wire is for connection to the battery (12v).  Should there be a fuse in-between the radio and the 12v battery?  If so, what amp?
2.  I do not see a ground wire connection.  How does this radio get grounded?
3.  The wire for speakers is a grey plug with 3 small holes.  How do I connect the speakers?  Can I connect 2 newer speakers without damaging this nice radio?

Bob,  My 67 230SL has this same radio unless yours is stereo.  The US Blaupunkts have a smaller face plate opening to fit the smaller (non-DIN) dash opening found in US spec cars, at least in the 230s.  It is always good to have an inline fuse for the radio that is easy to get to.  I think the ground is through the chassis since it mounts to the dash opening and by the bracket on the back that attaches to the body.  Your dash speaker should have a jack with two prongs that fits in two of the radio's holes, one being common and the other two for series vs. parallel or something like that, I might be wrong in this assumption, but you only use one of these two other holes.  I don't think I've seen the later 280s with a Blaupunkt probably because the Beckers now had stereo as well as cassette.

Hi Bob,

There is a small fuse block near the expansion tank on the passenger side of the car.  It is specifically there to fuse the radio.  There should be a black wire which runs from this fuse box through a grommet in the fire wall ending up right near the radio.  Becker installation instructions say it should be a 5 amp fuse.  The Becker instructions also say to attach a ground wire to the spade clip on the amplifier box on the Grand Prix and Mexico models.  Can you post a pics of the speaker connector?

Hello Guys,
I took a picture of both types together for you. The Becker and Blaupunkt both use their own special speaker plugs. The ground wire is normally attached to the 10mm head mounting bolt on the back of the unit (see pic). You can also see one half of an in line fuse on the yellow Blaupunkt wire. Jeff is correct, a separate fuse box is used under the hood. The inline fuse was unique to the Blaupunkt only, since it was an add on after factory delivery to dealers.

It really helps!
I was able to get the Blaupunkt plugged in this evening.  Do you have any idea what would cause the volume control to only operate at the highest volume level?  Any idea of a "fix"?

Hello Bob,
This is not unusual after long storage. Usually the coil in the control needs cleaned up. Get an aresol can of "electronic" or "contact" cleaner and spray it down. It should work fine afterwards.

I have a bunch of the original wiring diagrams and owner's booklets for these old  units around here somewhere.

Hi Joe,

That's interesting....  I did this last night.  What I did was to stand the radio up on the bench, radio face up.  I sprayed electronic cleaner down the shaft that the on/off button connects to.  I then turned the button on and off several times and let it sit on the bench in the "up" position.

Is this what you meant in your post?  Should I also spray directly on the switch "box" inside the radio itself?

I really hope this works.  I am anxious to test again this evening.

hello Bob,
Yes, pop the top or bottom cover off and spray directly into the metal can of the control wherever possible. Using a generous amount will not hurt anything. Work the control back and forth. Spray some of the other mechanisms to free things up also. Check the tuner light bulb and if needed touch up the indicator arrow of the tuner with some bright orange model paint (hobbyshop) while your in there!

Hi Joe,

  You were right!  Sprayed the electric cleaner all over, inside, etc. and after it dried, plugged it in and ...  IT WORKED!  Volume control now works low to high.  THANKS!
Question: The 7v .1a bulb is dead.  Do you know a source for these bulbs.  Blaupunkt no longer carries them.  MB dealer also does not have them.
