Hey Joe,

Over the years I have learnt a lot of hands on techniques from you and the forum.
To further my education I would like to learn how to do a valve/rocker arm/camshaft adjustment on my early 250SL.
Also I have never DONE a brake bleed by myself or with anyone else so I would like that to be part of a discussion/demonstration.

thanks

Hi Joe,

This is my first time attending PUB.  I'm guessing that many of the workshop subjects will be motor-centric, which will be great.  But I'd also like learn something about suspension and steering restoration.  I've got a lot of play in my steering these days.

Thanks tons,

Good suggestion Steve,

We have not covered this subject yet and it would be a good addition to the program.

I like to suggest a short discussion on fuses for the 230, 250 and 280 sl

A) what to check and how should you check should your car stall or will not re-start during a trip.

B) what spare fuses one should carry

C) what tool one should carry to remove them for change out (if one has big fingers it makes it difficult to handle the little buggers) :)

D) any tips or tricks on this subject.

I mention this since not being up to date on this subject has cost me near to $1K Canadian last fall on a Sunday outing all due to a little fuel pump fuse (tow truck, evaluation of the problem at a Benz dealership and a radiator repair damaged due to unloading from the flatbread truck).

If we spend a few minutes on this subject it may save a member the inconvenience and a fist full of dollars. Just thinking out loud.

PS. Since I had my issue last fall I've learned from knowlageble members here that sometimes it is difficult to tell if a fuse is faulty also if one turns the key to number 1 position one can hear the primary fuel pump and if not it points to the fuse. If I had known all this at the time I would have been able to help myself.

Joe, and others,

Are there a number of first time attendees for this PUB? Would it be worthwhile to have a table top explanation of the oil filter and all its seals, the fuel filter (s), greasing, normal kinds of maintenance? Or put that all together with the fuse discussion?

Yes, some critical information in the oil filter discussion especially. Combining them with the fuse talk seems logical. This subject is fairly simple but critical and should not take much  time.

Thanks!

Yes, they day I buy a Vintage Benz with the top oil rubber spacer in place on the oil filter mount I will buy a winning lottery ticket.  Even contemporary Mercedes parts guys and mechanics do not know it should be there.  Trivially simple, and definitely worth going over!

Joe, I concur with Bob in that I would be very interested in learning how to do a valve adjustment.  While having never done one I understand they should be done fairly routinely (every couple of years?) and I know my rocker arms need replacement.  Very much looking forward to my second PUB and seeing faces I haven't seen since 2011.

Joe,

Hi.  Let me know if I can be of any assistance with demonstrations/sessions.  Also, I plan to take a little vacation around PUB time to help you set up and/or tear down.

I second the motion to go over the valve adjustment process! I had to redo mine several times as it was for hard for me to determine the right feel of the adjustment.

I was at PUB 2013 and had a blast.  I would like to come this year, but am a little wary because my clutch is slipping.  It happens under hard acceleration in 5th (and probably 4th) gears when I am at higher RPM's (passing).  It will probably last for a while in this condition, but a 1500 mile round trip is a little off-putting.  I just do not have the facilities in my garage to tackle it, especially before PUB.  Would a clutch job be a good demonstration for PUB, or is that kind of thing just too much?  Just thinking out loud here, and definitely not trying to get free mechanic work, but I could bring all needed parts, special tools, and help set up, do any grunt work, and we could share the experience.  I would be more than willing to make a nice donation to the community pot for food and beverages or whatever.  Mine is the Red 1969 280 with the ZF 5-speed.  I totally understand if something like this is way beyond PUB.  Just a thought.

I guess many participants may be interested in seeing a rare ZF 5 speed trans from all angles.

You could look under my car for that. :)

I think that most people would benifit from basic maintance instructions. Since many owners only do some stuff at home, knowing what to look for so they can judge the condition of their cars is probably going to be more usefull than something that's complex and only a few would be doing on their own.
Setting valves, checking front end play, doing a compression test, changing an oil filter, greasing your chassis, checking your rear axle, setting up throttle linkage, doing a light test, checking all of your fluids and any other regular maintanence that helps to keep your car running well, and above all, safe for the road.

Dan, all these are quite basic things I guess most owners are already conversant with. The ZF trans is something special, like the 3.27 rear axle was something special in a previous PUB. However, I understand replacing a clutch may be a bit too involved for a week end gathering. Unless a group of enthusiasts dedicate to it while others do other things. I would be quite happy to be part of such group, but I'm not sure yet my scedule will allow me to attend.

Good suggestions.  As usual we will have some basics and some more advanced subjects to cover. Since I will have engine and transmissions out on display, a clutch replacement can be demonstrated easily and quickly.

How about a session on the Frigiking A/C? I need to replace a clutch and some of the vent louvers are broken and I'll need to get at them and find a way to replace them too.

Also, is there a schedule for the PUB? I am trying to figure out when I should plan to arrive/depart. Should I get there Thursday evening and depart Monday morning? Are there sessions on Friday and all day Sunday? Or, should I arrive Friday evening and depart Monday AM?

Best,
Roland
