Saw this at a friends garage, a work in progress but underneath looked stunning

That is nice looking and quite a bit of work. I hate to call out the restoration Police but.... 

Actually the body color under the car isn't total coverage. see pic. I even went way more than the factory did. A good portion of the underside is a green gray color which is the primer on the steel. The beige undercoat was spot applied above that then the body color as overspray. The wheel wells were pretty much solid coverage though.

It is hard to stop spraying body color all over because it looks so pretty, so maybe I will call the resto Police on myself as well.

I guess when you have an individual rotisserie it is too easy to just paint the whole thing rather than the over spray that both the W113 and W111 obvously had.  I know the paint job cost more than my Pagoda cost to buy and the cost of the work on it so far is more than my Pagoda is worth.  They even sent the chrome to the USA as they did not think they could get a good enough job here in Oz.  Madness but a 3.5 Cabriolet has a lot of value.

I think we are all have some degree of madness. The shipping of the chrome alone must have cost $$$. Just curious, where was the chrome sent?

That's where I get hung up.  I love looking at these perfect cars, but wouldn't ever want to drive it for fear of spoiling it's perfection, or at a minimum creating a day long cleaning project to mop up after the drive.  Personally I do it all for the retro experience of seeing, feeling, and of course driving these older cars.

If you had seen what the underside looked like you would understand the need for what is being done.  The entire underside of the vehicle including all that is attached to it was covered in Ziebart.  Ziebart is one nasty mess of an undercoating which IMHO should have never been invented.  It took 5 gallons of mineral spirits and two days of professional pressure washing just to remove it.
