Jon,
I think that is a bit unusual but they say with the VW, take off the bottom ten inches and replace, both down and in and you will usually fix the rust problem!!!

Finally finished all the welding for rust repair. The last item was replacing a large part of the Dash Board. It had a large hole in it I suspect for some radio communications unit when it was a Telegraph Post hauler!! for the Post Master Generals Department. Luckily the seller had found a section of dashboard that came with the sale so it is now fitted in.
Now its onto the painting preparation, the longest and hardest job to do I think.
Garry
Pre dash repair and post dash piece welded in.

Wow Gary ... You've got your work cut out . Think its the only road to follow bringing it back in shape ....respect.
Are you going to leave it as a flatbed ,or is a pickup version your target ? You know with the folding sides....
Love the overhanging roof btw ... looks great .

Rick,
I am putting side gates on it as I found some new ones in New Zealand that cost a fortune but as they are NLA worth every penny.
The overhang was as a result of the dusty roads here in Australia they made them so that the cooling air is scooped up across the double skinned roof, down the double skinned back wall and then under the flatbed to the engine rather than through vents in the sides of the rear engine bay. Saved the engine from being destroyed sucking in dust. A special order for the Post and Telegraph Department back in the early 60’s.
They are nicked named Muffin Tops!!!

Well Gary I got to say that will be one cool pickup .
Been looking for years for a "samba " 23 window and finally found a 21 window ....but really prices through the roof , so walked away. So I will follow your restoration with great interest
My latest project ( a 59 MGA ) is in its final stage of build so ....maybe I get inspired again.
"Muffin " top looks great ....even nice and straight as far as I can see.

Was working on it yesterday, found a lot of rust in the outer roof so cut it off and a friend gave me a replacement piece off a donor car he had that was in better condition in the roof than mine. It now looks like it has had a lobotomy
Photo of roof cut out and new one tacked on. Had hoped to have it painted by Xmas but will now be end of January, you know how it goes.

Hi Garry,
while you are contemplating the paint job consider adding some coloring pizzaz and a place for your surf boards!

I was thinking about buying an old long board to put in the back.
Purchased the paint last week (334G lower half and 350H upper!!!!!) and was to be painting today but not quite ready for the paint. Purchased some coco mats from UK and they arrived with in 5 days, had a slight problem and it was resolved with a new mat 5 days later. Recommended and excellent service from Odette at Madmatz UK.
http://www.madmatz.co.uk
I believe they do Pagodas as well. They are better than the ones I has previously got for my Pagoda from CocoMats.

Garry,
good to know that there is another vendor of coco mats but can you tell what is better/different on the one from Madmatz?

Alfred,
Madmatz are not quite as thick as the Cocomats but have a rubber type material impregnated as a backing. They are considerably lighter, and shape to the floor better or in my VW case to the front wall as well with backing boards.
