Ontario Ownership: MERC or MERZ. How to correct it?
« on: May 19, 2015, 03:44:13 »
A peculiar issue I have at hand: The old Ontario ownership (pre 1990s) for older Mercedes was registered under Make as MERC.
As you may know, that code is reserved for Mercury, while MERZ is used for Mercedes. All the other information is correct on the ownership: VIN, model, body type, etc.

While inquiring with MTO re: correction in the ownership, MTO's policy is for the owner to obtain an Antique Club's or Manufacturer's letter stating that the vehicle is indeed, a Benz.
No appraisal, statement of work/invoice from a dealership or insurance document would serve the purpose.

Question: has anyone in Ontario had similar problem and how was it resolved?

Igor, you are correct, when it comes to government bureaucracies there is no logic in their thinking.  I got the same story when I wanted to change the VIN on another car because they were using the wrong number for the VIN.  I haven't done it yet.

Are you a member of the MBCA?  If not, join.  There is a Toronto Section and I am sure you can get a letter from them.  Probably your easiest path.  Plus there are lots of advantages to being a member, discounts, club events, magazine etc.  Send me a PM and I'll send you the contact info for Harald, the President of the Toronto Section.

I have noticed over the years that club use MERC for our cars.
I believe that is wrong.
Merc means Mercury manufactured by Ford.
I propose that members should use either of the following:
M/B
MB
Benz
What do the members think?

When I put a personalize plate on my car I had about 10 different choices I ask the Ontario Service person on the desk to check. All were taken then the lady came up with what is now on my car. I said sure, let's go for it.

At the time I had no idea of the issue Igor pointed out here in this thread.

However, should anyone mistake my car for a Mercury or a Ford that's there problem LOL I have no problem with the letters on my plate.
