CCS has gone limp

Hi all,

I have a w111 coupe automatic, 2.2L with the CCS on the inlet manifold. I recently replaced the transmission switch for Drive, the reverse one was working properly and for 500 miles all was well, now though the CCS functions and pushes out but is so limp is no longer increases the idle speed, is it possible that these go 'limp' rather than pack up all together and has anyone uncovered a fix or a workshop that can repair these?? I have only seen one on ebay for $US500 and can't find them new anywhere?? does anyone know where new ones of these are still available??

should have also asked if anyone has every butchered one and opened it up to see how they function and what might cause a failure, and has anyone ever investigated an alternative non-mercedes part to replicate it, I've seen carburetor  versions on the interweb that seem to have the same purpose.

Have you tried the Classic Center? I bought one for my W111 a few years ago. There is some debate as to whether solenoids can go limp or just go out altogether. Here is what I would do. Check to see that you are getting the full voltage to the solenoid. Next, make sure you throttle levers and such move freely. If you have not oiled them recently, they may be too stiff for the solenoid to push. Check the bell crank lever under the exhaust as that gets seized up frequently. Next, pull the solenoid and check on the bench. If it is very strong, you may have a weak ground or bad wiring to the solenoid. I hope that helps.

The screws that hold the solenoid together are staked and it gets messy when you try to take them out. Not sure what you can do when you get it apart anyway.

My CSS went limp a couple of years ago. When I replaced it with a new one, it functioned perfectly once again, without any changes to wiring, greasing the linkages (which I routinely do anyway) or what have you. So I attributed it to 'old age'. I saved the old one with the plan to open it up some day to see about repairing it, but haven't come around to doing so.

I did reconsider changing the title of the post a few times, but it makes the most sense!!

I would be happy to replace with a new one, but so far I haven't seen one available and I suspect it will be $AUS1000 or more, and therefore out of my price range, I might put some feelers out locally for a working 2nd hand and see what happens.

Don't suppose anyone would like to guess at what could possibly go wrong with age on a magnet? magnets don't change their make up over time to my knowledge??

I respect the Dr. for not taking the bait. This one was just too easy.

Try salvage yards. These injection motors are around and automatics the more common option. As far as know (EPC would confirm), the CCS is the same for many models and years.
