Perhaps some may enjoy a tool quiz. It is a factory workshop item.
What is it (for)?

(perhaps the ones here in our Forum who are a bit "into it" may hold back a little

I have a very similar looking corkscrew. That's a very useful puller

hauser is on the right track alright .... Like Cees I will hold my fire too .... James I too have something similar only it has two arms that move up into the air and I use it to open a bottle of my well aged fine red wine every other night or so

Nice thread Hans .... Keep on posting ... I recall my master in Germany when I asked him "Do we have a tool to handle this?" He would look over his glasses and in a firm look would say "No ... Make one!"

I look forward to see some of the special tools that have been made and used on our Pagoda's

BBB 15-18/2: puller for crankshaft sprocket for timing. (Never seen or used it, just browsed)

There is a tool for the sliding rail pins. I have the center bit but have yet to find the 2 other pieces.

The 4mm thread attaches to something and the the part being pulled fits into the cavity of the cylindrical piece?

Certainly so!
One more comment: It is valid for all Pagoda models, except the very early 230SL

Not looking at a Pagoda right now, but in other M-Bs of the era it might be used to remove the rotating central core from a heater control valve.

Hey, not precisely what Mercedes designed it for, but that would be a good use for it!

Answer to Quiz
This is the M-B official tool for removing a (stuck) heater valve
I was happy to find the item, as they are kind of rare.
The tool has a M-B number 180 589 023 300 This indicates it was introduced in the fifties, to serve the Ponton type cars.
The tool is useful even today, as it ensures that the outer soft brass metal body (housing) of the heater valve, with its horizontal slit, is not damaged when a stubbornly corroded valve body is extracted.

Enclosed are pictures of how it is used. Shown here on a "free" passenger compartment heater unit, but it is meant to be used for a unit when in a car.

Note: The early 230SL's came without the circular opening in the firewall, over the heater valve. This design limited any access to the valve, and was subsequently changed. An opening covered by a plastic cap was introduced

The rubber O-ring on the brass valve body must be exchanged prior to re-assembly, use water faucet type grease
