Wants to stall after starting
« on: June 28, 2015, 16:03:06 »
Hello,
I have a 1969 280SL, and it wants to stall after starting. After I turn the key, it will "catch", rev to 1000+/-, and then want to stall.  She will usually keep running, and if I manage the throttle carefully I can work through this "flat spot".  After the initial start up, she runs and drives just fine.  This problem was first noticed after I replaced the starter with the new "High Torque" Model.  However, the issue got worse after I did the following:
1.  I installed a new Pertronix Ignition System, along with their Flamethrower Coil;
2.  I installed new Bosch Injectors, fuel filter, and new NGK spark plugs;
3.  I rebuilt and adjusted the Throttle Linkage (it was very worn);
Other than this starting issue, the car has never idled/ran this good!
I suspect the Cold Start Valve is faulty, or maybe my Throttle Adjustment could be off a bit?
Anybody have any ideas?
Thank you,
Galen

Sounds to me like your throttle needs adjustment. Have a read in the Technical Manual under Linkage Tour.

I had similar issues two years ago and The Benz Dr. Made a linkage adjustment and ever since then no more issues.

Good Luck!

Sounds to me like your Won't Run Device aka Warm Running Device (WRD) isn't working right, probably a bad thermostat and/or stuck air slide.  You get a quick shot from the cold start valve but then you don't have enough enrichment for a smooth warm up.  Lots of posts on how to test the thermostat and free up the air slide.

Update:
I replaced the WRD air filter, and started the car.  Then I removed the new air filter, and checked for suction.  It was pretty good, and when I covered the mounting port, the car would almost stop running.  I drove the car until it reached operating temperature, and then checked the mounting hole.  There was no suction at all;  I would assume that indicate the WRD is operating properly?
What is left?  Throttle linkage?  Cold Start Valve?
Anybody have any ideas?
