Unique SL for sale
« on: July 01, 2015, 10:55:11 »
Hi all,

This must be the most unique 280SL.  It is so rare as the seller describes, that I noted even the grille star is replaced by a "cyclops" style headlight and it looks more like the 1948 Tucker 48   ;D ;D ;D.....lol.

Cheers,

If the car was as good as the seller claims, why would he have done a "restoration?"

Well, they wanted to do away with the redundant lower rear chrome strips - and they met with full success   ;)

This car is presenting well; and pricing is about where it should be for a third-party broker seller in today's market.

As for restoration, it is as I've come to find, and concurred with many, that finding any survivor Pagoda with original paint is nearly impossible. So this restoration may not have been to bring a neglected car to driving condition, but more to maintain a good car as good. Don't dismiss it out of hand.

As for the cyclops headlight, this is laughable--but nobody has ever come to any posting here on sl113.org regarding the [extremely fragile] grill star and barrel without vehemently complaining about Mercedes-Benz pricing on this part. They complained when it was $300, then $600, then $1,000, then $1,200...and the last I heard from the Classic Center is that this part has gone NLA and the last one they sold was $2,000. On a car starting at this price below $40K, and maybe eventually selling for less than $80K, "investing" in a grill star is something the seller just isn't going to do...but this will be a turnoff to many. So will some missing trim bits.

Pictures tell a good story, sure--but beware anyone buying any Pagoda these days without getting to the car yourself or with an expert, and passing judgment then. Just relying on a broker's description is not a great idea.

I'm impressed the original owner received $2,540 for his '67 Mercury trade-in.

When you see the rear quarter chrome strips missing on any W113 it always makes me suspicious about the existence of patch panel repair in that specific area behind the rear wheels. I base that on evaluating many of these cars and seeing that as pattern.

Always nice to see one if truly an original one owner car. Looks like some serious work done inside the trunk/boot with what appears to be a "under coating" material applied.

I think that is what you would refer to as being a floor mat or boot carpet   ::) ;D

I kind of like the car except for the hideous added headlight.  Offhand the things I notice are:
1.  Kangols installed wrong
2.  If those are replacement seats they look un-stuffed and uncomfortable
3.  It appears that the clock works - yeah!
4.  Becker name bar missing
5.  Wrong VIN in the listing
6.  Where's the fan knob?
7.  Wrong gas cap
8.  Hood torsion bar - isn't it missing some rubber things?
9.  Trunk carpet?
10. Original Blaupunkt radio missing replaced by generic Becker (probably wise)

I like the car.  But I don't think I would have replaced the interior or paint if it was as good as the seller says it was.

The auction seems to have ended with no bids, however on another note upon closer attention to the description the seller claims the "3rd headlight" as being a dealer add-on requested by the owner.  Obviously that would not be on the data card as an option selected by the buyer from the factory just as in radios that were mainly dealer fitted.

Another amazing option this car has is the 3rd high beam, the original headlights in 1969 were dim at best so the owner had the dealer install an additional high-beam light in the center of the grill, this is the only w113 SL I have seen with this option and I personally think it gives the car a ton of originality and gets tons of questions everywhere you go, a really cool option.
