Hazet Oil Service Tool at PUB

I keep forgetting how cool this tool is every time I see it at PUB!
So, I go to look for one and see there are several.
Is the one for our cars the Hazet 2760 14/17? Or is it another model?

Mike,

Yes, the Hazet 2760 is the Oil Service Wrench correct for our cars.  The "Allen" hex insert is longer in the 107 later wrenches.  The shorter hex insert is correct for ours.  If you see the wrenches on ebay online, you will see the difference.

There are some listed for $90 or more, but you should be able to find a good one for $35-$45 plus freight if you are patient.

I am including one in each of my tool kits.  Because they are one cool looking tool !

Yes, 14/17 is the correct tool
And cool looking - Yes
Practical? - no!
The bolt on the filter bowl is quite long and it takes ages to undo and do up with this tool.
Modern ratchet type wrenches do the job much quicker.

I would never have thought that tool was intended for the filter bowl.  I always associate that tool with the drain plug for the diff and the oil pan...

You must be right!

The original engine drain plugs on early cars were 17mm hex head.
I forgot as I've changed mine to the later 14mm allen head.

I hate taking off that ^%$# long bolt on the filter housing. Always an issue, always a bit of a mess no matter what I do. Generally lots of towels involved!!!

Might try to replace that tiny O-ring type seal in the "hat" in the bottom of the filter bowl. That "seals" the bolt shaft when it is loose. Might get a few drips from that, but nothing more when it is fresh. This is not to be confused with the wider doughnut seal that seals the bottom of the filter. I hope that helps.

Unfortunately that task is on my to-do list on my car (not my Pagoda).  Hat missing.  Got new oil canister.  So when I change the oil I'll take out the new O-ring that I put in wrong and try to put it in a different oil canister...  Yuck.

Wallace--thanks. I've been doing this for 15 years, the issue isn't me, or the O-Ring. It's the "brilliant" oil filter placement! Even if I drain the oil, let it sit for 24 hours, there is always some residual amount left in the canister, and somehow this always manages to get out. Towels up top, cardboard below, and a healthy respect for the car gets me through. If I had a lift of course, it would be easier too...

I figured you knew about that especially after the PUB's session on the oil filter housing. I really just posted that for the benefit of others that may have the same issue. It is another "hidden" seal in the housing. Mine had been on there forever and was hard as a rock. You can tell the differenece because a good seal should snug the bolt and not allow it to slide easliy up and down.

That may be Hauser--probably some opinions one way or another. But the issue isn't oil changing. It's removing the filter. Having that oil sucking device won't change the filter...that's always where the mess happens.
