Coolant leaking from open port by the injection pump
« on: October 13, 2015, 03:27:18 »
Does anyone know what is supposed to go in the hole that is show in these two pics? I started the car for the first time today and it ran ok until coolaat started to come out of the hole. Is it for a temp sensor or does a bolt or plug go there?

Pretty sure that port is where the thermocouple end goes that comes from the temperature gauge. It tells the dash gauge what the engine temp is. The thermocouple is a small sealed hollow tube that is filled with gas. If it is pinched or cracked, it will not work. The coolant block shown coming off the engine has three ports. One for the thermo-time switch, one for the coolant feed to the WRD and one port for the thermocouple.

I am surprised coolant didn't spray out of it immediately after the engine was started?

Since you have a 230, I would suggest it is the place for the "Thermo switch". See http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Engine/ThermoSwitch

Thanks guys. I checked out the link and at looks like it could fit the bill. Do you know where I can find one and the tube needed to connect to the gauge? I tried a Google search of 230sl thermo sensor and found pics and sensosors for sale that look like the sensor that is in front of the open port.

You will need to buy a complete temp gauge unit.

Assuming you have the temperature gauge in the gauge cluster, many speedo shops can reattach a new thermocouple tube to the temp gauage. Palo Alto in fact replaced my old tube when the gauge cluster was rebuilt. You will have to remove the cluster and send it in. Or you could buy a used gauge and hope it works.

There is still probably some remnant of the old tube somewhere in the dash still attached to the back of the temp gauge.

The tube isn't the problem. If you don't have bulb for the end that sits in the cooling water then you do have a problem.

I pulled the gauge slightly out and can see part of the tube. Later I will have my wife move the tub while I look around to see where the other end is. Hopefully its stuffed somewhere in the dash.

What I saw was the oil pressure line. He first two pics are of my gauge. I don't seem to have a line that comes off the temp gauge or any indication that there was one. I attached a pic of a temp sensor with line that attaches to the temp gauge. Any ideas .

I pulled the gauges apart and saw that the line from the temp gauge was cut. I thought it was a wire before because the line is wrapped in braded wire then plastic. I found a used gauge cluster from ebay and will swap the part out.
