Maybe this isn't worth pursuing but I noticed that some American engines like the Ford 460 have 2 piece rubber rear main seals as replacements for the original rope seal.  It would probably require some form of adapter to be turned to fit our engines but it should provide a better seal for the rear main.

I can only but concur having replaced mine twice after overhauling my engine.  Its the one seal that appears to be the most difficult to get to seal correctly.

I have a lathe and will have my oil pan off this winter.....But, I am hoping to suck someone like Mark Bull into this so I can just buy it.

Sounds interesting - a one piece modern seal would be ideal but difficult.....  so converting to a two piece neoprene seal would be a step in the right direction.
I experienced a slight oil leak after my engine rebuild and immediately suspected that it was that 50's style rear seal. Luckily an extra nip up of my oil pan bolts solved the problem but I still have little faith in the rear seal. There is a good reason no modern engine design uses this anymore.

Great idea- I used to own an Austin Healey 3000 and your idea is a pretty standard mod to get rid of the rope - sold by various parts suppliers. For Austin Healey owners....only a dope would stick with rope
