« on: October 15, 2004, 14:04:53 »
Hello, I am purchasing a 64 230sl euro model. What are the differences?

Also, where do I find seatbelts at a reasonable cost?

Thanks very much.

Jackson,

Hello and welcome to the Group!  Are you very familiar with the W113 chassis?  What do you want to know the differences between?  Differences between 230, 250, or 280 SL?  Differences between Euro and USA?  Differences between 1964 and other years?  Are you wanting to know basic differences or detailed mechanical or engineering differences?

If you have just started shopping around for a W113, you might want to buy a copy of Pagoda World, Issue 4 when it comes out.  This is the magazine published by our Group and Issue 4 is at the printer right now.  It inclues a set of very extensive check lists of things you should look at on each W113 you examine while shopping around.

For your seatbelt question, step one is to use the Search feature on this Forum (located in upper right corner of screen) and see what you can find.  Lots of seatbelt discussions in the past.  Search for both "seatbelt" and "seat belt" seperately, I think it makes a difference.

Step two is to call vendors.  I highly recommend calling as many vendors as your patience allows.  To find parts, please consult our Vendor Database here:
http://www.sl113.org/data/show_table.asp?table_name=usr_parts_and_service_suppliers

The Euro cars had seat belts as an option, my 1966 car originally delivered in Italy still has no seatbelts.  You have several seatbelt options.
 - Two-point lapbelts
 - Three-point manually adjustable seatbelts
 - Three-point retracting seatbelts (not an original W113 option)

Have fun shopping!

Thank for your response.

I purchased a 64 230 euro model...I wanted to know the exact difference between US and Euro. Is there a disadvantage to buying the euro model?

Thank you.

Jackson,

Hi.  Congratulations on your purchase!  I don't know if I can list all the differences, but I can tell you there is nothing wrong with buying a Euro model.  I assume you live in the USA?  There were more differences with the 280SL between USA/Euro, but here are some differences that I can think of:

 - Euro model has metric instruments, USA model has standard.
 - Euro model has no extra bumper parts, USA model has bumper "over riders".
 - Euro model has one-piece multi-function headlights, USA model has sealed beam headlights without built-in fog lights.
 - Some Euro models had turn signals on the sides of the front fenders, no USA models did (later 280s had reflectors).
 - Some Euro models had an extra piece of chrome under the rear license plate, USA models did not.
 - Some Euro models had a different rear axle ratio than the USA models.
 - Euro 280s had the hard door pockets, but the USA 280's had soft elastic door pockets.  All door pockets were hard pockets on early cars.
 - Euro cars used the all red tail light lenses further through production, but the USA cars started using the 3-color tail light lenses with the 250 SL, and maybe the 230 SL(?).
 - Euro 280 SLs had a higher performance cam shaft, but USA cars had lower performance cam shaft for emissions reasons.  The 230 SL and 250 SL were the same.
 - Euro 280 SLs had fewer emissions controls than USA 280 SLs.  The 230 SL and 250 SL were the same.
 - Euro cars had the option of a 4-band radio (AM/FM/SW/LW), but the USA cars had a 2-band radio (AM/FM).

For your 230 SL, there really is no major difference, major differences being engine changes effecting performance, suspension changes, etc.

Rodd, Euro and US 113s switched over to amber tail lights at some point in, I believe, 1970.

Parts aren't really any harder to come by for a Euro car. I'd say 230 SL cosmetic parts are harder to come by than 280 parts though. (Actually, early injection pump parts are extremely difficult to find as well.)

Seatbelts are a little tricky. It depends on whether you want to go for period looks or modern safety. If you want period belts, you'll have to find a parts car & prepare to pay handsomely. An American 280 SL donor car will have late-60s/early-70s era Kangol belts. If you want modern belts, there are lots of options out there all over the Web. You may even want to consider a 107 SL system that's still available from a dealer.
