Replacement Oil Pump

I contacted Metric Motors to inquire about a new oil pump for my 1970 280SL M130 engine during the rebuild process. They recommend a replacement OEM pump that they have been using in all M130 rebuilds for years that offers 15% higher volume and is made in Germany. I am looking for any experiences with this pump and recommendations (or non-recommendations) please.

Hi Jack,

We recently used one in Alex D's engine. It came from Bud's Benz.  It looked to me that it was simply an oil pump from the later Mercedes 280 twin cam series W110 chassis M130 engine. Not sure what if any modification were made, might just need to bolt-on or remove a bracket?

I purchased and fitted one from Metric, the only problem I had was that when the bottom pan was fitted the rubber inlet fitting on the pump came into contact with the bottom pan.
I contacted Mike about this anomaly, he assured me it was normal.
I duly fitted everything and all seems well.

The rubber extension is discussed in the latest BBB.  It is normally used when the latest deeper, ribbed oil sub-pan is used. It is left off when the stock shallow ban is used. It looks like it will work fine even with the rubber in place, since the rubber has four legs which keep it from sealing completely on the oil pan.

I've been using them for years without any issues. One should note that the pump doesn't produce oil pressure; it produces volume, and that pressure results from the tightness of the bearings and other related parts within the engine. This oil pump with higher volume, will in effect, allow for some engine wear without loosing any pressure. If it does come from the M110 engine, it would make sense because that engine has a lot of moving parts.
