Timing Marks on Harmonic Balancer
« on: December 21, 2015, 00:47:43 »
All,   I have removed my injection pump to have it rebuilt.  Which set of timing marks do I use to determine TDC and 20 degrees after TDC?  I have a set of marks closest to the timing pointer and a second set of marks closest to the front of the engine.  The marks closest to the pointer is that the inner or outer set of  numbers and which set do I use.  The car is a 69 280sl  Thanks in advance.

There is an early and a later version timing pointer in 40 degree different positions. Unfortunately, the later vibration dampners had both scales on them for some reason. The latest pointer was a triangle shaped pointer and used the scale closest to the engine block which is 40 degrees different from the other scale.  The early pointer was rectangular-like or trapezoid shape and uses the front timing scale and this pointer is mounted to the left (toward battery) and lower on the engine. The change was made to improve visibility during ignition timing procedures. If you have a BBB go to page 00-7/2 for diagrams and details.
