Michaeal,

Check out this thread ----> http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=16948.0

You can also purchase a stand for your hardtop (my stand is empty I prefer my top on the car, gives it that real Pagoda look :))

One thing to consider is the height of your ceiling.  Once you get the required paraphernalia (gutter type roof racks and the pulleys and extra straps) to hang the hardtop I found that even with a taller than normal ceiling the hardtop was too low and was really in the way.  I now just lean the hardtop against the wall in a corner.  I made a shelf to hold up the hardtop which I use for antifreeze, oil and  other odds and sods.   That way if I need to twirl around a 12' 2X10 in my garage I don't hit the hardtop like a piñata.

To be honest - since 2012 I have only put the hardtop on once and that was for a Christmas picture.  I have the hardtop for my MGB hanging in the other corner - the last time it was on my car was 1990.

My hardtop has been hanging for about four years now from an oak beam in my 1806 stone barn, four meters high, using:
- a manual winch
- a set of nylon straps
- a single Thule roof rack bar
The whole contraption cost maybe $25.

I've used a hoist from EZ TOP in Houston Tx. for about 10 years and it has worked well.  Arms fold under the roof with pads which lift up under the top from both sides at the center of gravity, not attached to the gutters.  Has a manual crank to which a power drill can be attached to speed up the lift.

I had a single rope pulley mounted in the ceiling in my old garage and it was pretty cumbersome to remove or install the top by myself.
I copied this one from another forum member and it has worked great! I bought the winch at Harbor Freight and the pipe and fittings from Home Depot. The winch lowers and raises the roof at a very controllable speed and the entire winch assembly with top suspended can slid forward or back on the pipe to position it perfectly above the car when removing or installing the top.

Here's my Roof Hoist story:
It took a couple of weeks of debating with myself about different ways of doing this, but I finally came up with a rigging to remove the roof of my 230SL singlehandedly. My objectives included low cost, simple, safe, and low cost. (Oh! Did I say that twice?) The plan was to use the rigging to remove the roof, move the car back fifteen feet, slowly drop the top to the floor and roll it away on the stand. NOT to leave it suspended, which in my reading of the W113 forum, sounds like a risky play.

Part of the challenge was how to "bolt it" into the ceiling. If you look closely at the photos below, you can see there is a steel "triangular prism" frame that supports the floor above and there is no wood in the construction. I took a heavy duty C-Clamp ($6) and bolted it around the strut of the prism at a point in one of the supports where it would not slide. I debated about then using a winch and chain hanging from this. In my research I discovered a pulley system that reduces the load by a factor of seven. The 100 pound roof would require about 15 pounds of pulling power -- a child could do it. (The pulleys were only $15 on eBay, where the main demographic for them appears to be hunters needing help to lift their spoils.)

The ratchet tie-downs (mini-winches) cost $11. The roller part can only hold about three feet of material so I had to cut off about ten feet to get it to work for this application.

I added a heavy duty swivel ($7) in case I don't park perfectly.

The critical part was attaching it to the car. I considered wood bars under the roof, but my friend @jpinet of this forum strongly advised me to use the "gutter" style roof rack which are generally NLA because car roofs don’t have gutters anymore! There were used ones on eBay (Yakima) which cost me $75 shipped. (Maybe they are available cheaper, but not by much from what I could see. These are a nice clean set.) I believe that by attaching four to the roof, two of them are almost like a safety backup to the main two which are as far to the rear as I can get them. I could probably do it with just the two near the rear, but it is safer with four.

All this worked like a charm. I started pulling on the rope and the roof came right up. I suspended it just above the top of the windscreen and backed the car out. Then I slowly lowered it to the ground and mounted it onto the rolling cart. Finally, I tied up the rigging and put it out of the way (after removing the mini-winches and putting them in a cabinet).

One of the advantages to this setup is that I can stand right next to the car while lifting the roof giving more control over the operation. I also like that it is non-invasive (easily reversible?) which means that my landlord will not have a problem with it because of this.:) The entire rigging cost me about $115, a reasonable amount to be sure.

I recently bought a new set of gutter mount racks from ProlineRacks:  http://www.prolineracks.com/proline-gmr165-rain-gutter-racks.html,
($50 for the pair).  I reinforced with a piece of 2x4.

I used a worm gear winch from Harbor Freight ($28) with 3/16 cable rigging (about $30). Slow but sure.  Under-top safety strap is a rachet tie-down strap used for securing pick-up truck loads. Talk about belt and braces!

I lower the top to the floor immediately after removal and store on a rolling frame.

Just make sure that they are very secure and that that green secondary strap is tight and will hold the roof in the event that the rack comes lose for any reason.

I have had some formal training on this matter. It was a $5000 lesson on how not to secure the top I had many years ago. :o :o :o

Thanks Garry, removal/replacement is an infrequent operation but an activity that warrants checks, double checks and triple checks prior to and while turning the crank.  I have read here of your unfortunate experience and  the memory of it pops into my head each time I make a lift.

Hey Bobmog,

I have my top suspended as well. May I ask where did you get the custom fit hard top cover?

Many thanks in advance!

Enclosed is the link to what SLS are offering - standing, hanging and a cover.

My idea was to have the hard top hanging low over the car while the car is not used (couple of inches), so if it falls, it falls from low height. The device from SLS is hanging from my ceiling, waiting for the hard top to be finished...

TJMart, Tony sorry for the late reply.  I originally bought the hardtop cover from Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories back in the 80s and they are no longer around, but I understand that their covers were made by Covercraft and looking at the Covercraft site sure enough they still offer it.  I highly recommend it I have had mine 30 plus years with no sign of wear.

I've had pictured hoist about 10 years, works well, no hanging from gutters, uses fold-under large pads to carry load.  Very solid, no creaking or questions.  Don't recommend their cover, Cover craft looks much nicer.

What sort of weight is the hard top? I've looked @ rope winch's going from 800 kg up but not sure what weight I should be targeting for my 68' SL?
Also, I will be taking the top off & putting it back on by myself so any of you who have a particular winch in mind, I would really appreciate your advice.

JOH, the top weighs 49kg.  The hoist you picture is plenty strong but will not be very easy to wall mount because of the long crank handle.

I suggest you search some of the many threads on this subject for pictures of devices, consider your mounting situation and then search the internet for rigging components.

I used a half-ton, worm gear, cable hoist similar to this one ton model.  Even that is major overkill.  Note that the hand crank turns in a plane parallel to the mounting surface.

John,

It is prudent to have a helping hand for gentle guidance, to avoid scratches during the final docking/undockingstages,  the HardTop does tend to swing about a bit.

Happy landings

;) Really enjoyed finding this again and giving it a closer reading. Thank you.
Just want to run this by you, this tackle is more popular in the US, than here in Europe! Can you confirm that the following one is fit for purpose?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ROPE-HOIST-new-hunting-hunt-deer-tool-block-tackle-nr/362055579520?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649#shpCntId
Also, that the rope included is up to the job?
Cheers.
