Taking alternator apart

hello friends,

I am now restoring (cleaning, plating, painting) engine pats. Today I wanted to take the alternator apart so that I could clean, sand and repaint the alternator housing. I am stuck! I have the pulley off, the 3 long external bolts are out, but i can still not open it. I want to separate the housing from the electrical parts. What's the trick here please? How do I take this thing to pieces safely without breaking it?

Jan, after all the pulleys, spacers, etc. are removed the front housing can be removed but it can be difficult. It is  a tight fit. Screw the nut back on the shaft flush, to protect the threads and tap on the shaft end gently. Otherwise a puller might be required.

I wanted to add to be carefull to keep the center(Stator) attached to the rear housing. It is wired to the rear housing(Diode plate) and too much pulling can break the connections.

Thanks gentlemen,

I have made some progress; the front is off. However, I can't get to separate the rotor out of the stator. I attach 2 pictures. I have removed one of the 2 bolts on the back, (red arrow), but that does not seem to help me much.
Any other step that I am missing please?

It has been a while since I tried the same thing. I got to where you are but recall stopping and giving up. If I remember correctly, you have to unsolder a couple wires to finish the tear down. I could be wrong, but I remember it wasn't worth it for me. I just cleaned everything the best I could, taped up the open areas and used a high heat aluminum engine spray. On top of that, I used a thin DRY coat of high heat clear. The dry coat (sprayed at a 24" or so) gives a dull look to it. Looks brand new and the clear makes it easy to clean.

Thanks a lot Wallace, that's useful info. Sounds like I should not have gone down this path. Putting everything back together from this point seems a bit diffult...it looks like taking it apart fully, is going to give better access to the small screws that I have undone.

Anyway, if this is what its going to be, then so be it... unless anybody else has a better idea?
I also looked on YouTube, but most of the alternators that they show there seem much more straightforward than ours.

With the brushes out you need only pry the rotor up and out being carefull not to damage any of the windings.  At this point it is held by the rear bearing being tight in the rear housing. There are no wire connections holding it in.

I have the original Bosch Dealer documents for break-down, repairs, exploded illustrations and all Bosch part numbers for all the parts for these alternators and starters. If I can get my scanner working, I will post them for you.

Thanks Joe, that would be useful. In the meantime I have managed to get the rotor out, by supporting the stator while gently hammering the back of the rotor with a pin. Now I am going to replace the bearings.
