Auto to manual changeover, flywheel torque settings
« on: February 18, 2016, 20:45:26 »
Hi all, I am converting my 230 from auto to manual. My workshop manual gives 3 values as follows,230 SL with auto 6.5+5 mkg,  with manual 9.5 +5 and 230 SL with  10 k bolts 4.5 + 5 for tightening the flywheel bolts. I am using the original bolts which get a full thread into the crank. Which value should I use?

Is the answer as simple as , use the value for a manual car as I am converting from auto to manual?

If I'm not mistaken these engines are NOT component balanced, which makes this more challenging than just swapping out parts.   I think you could have an open-minded machine shop match the balance from the original (Automatic) ring gear (flywheel) to the new Manual flywheel.

When I bought my 230SL the previous owner had blown the original engine and bought an engine from a 250SE (Automatic) and had it put in.  The car is a Manual...   when the engine was started it purred like a kitten, but as soon as you revved it up is would almost jerk out of the motor-mounts.  at that point the previous owner gave up and told the shop to sell the car for him.  I bought it as-is and was able to rebuild the original engine and was back on the road.

Sad part was the shop told him this would happen and he told them to "Just do it"...

My understanding is that the M180 engine is balanced with the crank and flywheel as a single unit, and both are by design not balanced as components separately.   My understanding is that an M130 engine is the opposite - independently balanced crank, independently balanced flywheel.   Not sure about M129 engine.

The problem of using an M130 engine from an automatic car with a manual transmission is sourcing a flywheel for an M130 engine for a manual transmission.  At least that's a big problem in the states...

I understand that Mark Bull in the UK has manufactured flywheels to go with his Getrag  5 speed box conversions. Wherever you obtain a flywheel I would have every thing which fits on the crank including clutch, damper, pulley balanced as 1 unit and whilst it is apart match the weight of the pistons and con rods.

Last time I spoke to Mark he did have one flywheel left.
This conversion is not straightforward.
The whole crank assembly must be balanced as a unit, then you've got to find a pedal box, all the clutch hydraulic equipment, re-wire the reverse lights, have a new carpet made for the transmission tunnel, new speedo cable, delete the idle speed solenoid etc.
I would only do it for a customer that I was convinced had the financial stomach to do it properly.

I wouldn't be doing it to convert a car from automatic.  I would be doing it to replace an M180 engine in a manual transmission car with an M130 from an automatic car.  In that case the crank of the M130 is already balanced, so I would need a manual transmission flywheel that was balanced.  I can use (so I've been told) the existing manual transmission that is in the fintail...
