missing Body and Paint number Plate
« on: February 27, 2016, 01:51:03 »
hello, I've reviewed all Forum posts I could find about reproduction of the body/paint number plate (mounted on the driver side relay panel). Unfortunately the comments I read didn't sound too promising. The plate on my early 230 was missing when I bought the car and I'd like to try and get one reproduced.. anybody had any luck getting one of these plates reproduced? Can the Classic Center obtain or make a plate using the car's Data Card? again, this is the plate (that used to be) mounted on the relay panel under the hood.
thanks in advance for recommendations, Charles

Alfred and Dieter, thank you for your help. Deiter, thanks! I'll need help asking him (in German) once I figure out what the numbers were and how they were arranged on my original plate.
I have the Data Card and will research how the numbers should be transposed on the body/paint plate.  thanks again, Charles

Charles,

Just post an e-mail to me once you have all the numbers that you wish to have on your plate. May I recommend you type the numbers into a text document, then make a screen shot of it or attach the text document to your e-mail to me.

I will then contact the Pagodatreff member and if he only deals in his mother tongue then I will handle it on your behalf (get a new plate for you, pay for it etc. you can then deposit the funds into my PayPal account). If he deals also in English I will put him in touch with you directly.

I don't know if the 230, 250 and 280 plates all look the same as far as stamping so are concerned, perhaps Alfred knows the awnser to this. Should you need an example as far as layout is concerned perhaps one of the 230sl members can send you a pic of his. If they are all the same then I be happy to take a photo of mine and nail it to you.

Just let me know.

Charles,
he understands enough written English to process the plate for you.
Easiest would be if you send him a copy of your data card (blank out key numbers if you are concerned) - or send it to me or Dieter for forwarding - and he'll arrange the numbers the way they should be.
He just did a bunch for us here in that way.

Funnily enough Memmo made me a plate for me today. (I only got in touch with him on Saturday.)
He sent me through a picture of the completed plate, and said he would ship on Monday.

The picture of his work looks perfect. He has been a pleasure to deal with.
I look forward to receiving the plate this week. I would highly recommend his services.

You will have no issues communicating with Mehmet. He is responsive to your emails. He is a pleasure to do business with and his work is excellent. He can make your data plate for you exactly like the original. He will need data card and you will also want to do some research on your car options.

Mehmets website is here:

All, Mehmet sent a picture of the completed body/paint plate and it definitely looks factory-original! As Perry noted earlier, his work is excellent.

Just curious, how did Mercedes originally mount these plates on the relay panel?  I've seen them mounted with phillips head screws, flat head screws, and pop rivets. Which is correct? Same for the firewall Data Plate - again, I've seen these secured with pop-rivets, phillips and flat head screws.  Which is correct for securing these plates? thanks, charles

For both plate positions; cross pan-head short sheet metal screws. The plate on the relay panel was mounted in before body was painted; thus screws there had a layer of body paint.

I received the repro body/paint plate in the mail from Mehmet over the weekend. I picked up some 332G from the auto-paint supply and after priming the plate, sprayed it with 2 coats of the 332G, and then let it harden overnight. I installed it the following morning and it looks great (see pics). Since the car was restored & sprayed 332G at Bud's less than two years ago, the fresh coats of 332G on the body plate match the rest of the car perfectly.

Sorry Peter,
"to be exact"  the correct screw is a DIN 7981 (not a #4 non-metric screw  :o ) lens head sheet metal screw 2.9 x 6.5 mm.

Sorry Peter,
"to be exact"  the correct screw is a DIN 7981 (not a #4 non-metric screw  :o ) lens head sheet metal screw 2.9 x 6.5 mm.

See if you can find that screw any where locally or anywhere for that matter. I just took these same original screws in question to a local hardware specialist and #4 is essentially identical same thread and head size. #4's sizing is also nearly identical to the smaller finishing screws used to secure the door chrome trim. If you put them side by side and then use tooling to measure the thread they are the same and the head size is the same.

see conversion chart here:
http://www.anzor.co.nz/gauge-millimeter-conversion-chart

Gauge to Millimeter Conversion Chart
Self Tapping Screw Gauge (g) Size (mm)
4 2.9
6 3.5
8 4.2
10 4.8
12 5.5
14 6.3
18 8.0

Not all local hardware stores will carry #4's usually its #6. And #6's are what you commonly see put into these cars. I know of nowhere that sells mm screws. I would think even SL Tech or Bud's is using #4's as a replacement because it's all you can get.

really?
How far away is MD from NY?  ;D
Maryland Metrics carries almost all metric screws including DIN 7981; see below.
I usually order larger quantities of metric screws and nuts online for myself and others in the vicinity from these companies:
