Am i correct in thinking the ballast resistor bypass-on-starting setup does not exist on the early cars? Is there a work around to aid cold starting please?

Hello Paul,
Yes, there is no by-pass on the early cars. The by-pass started in the later 280 series. Have you checked the cold starting aids on your car yet? We can help you do that.

Hi Joe. All the cold start Aids seem OK thanks. just thinking a bypass would help even more. Especialy when very cold which it is here now. Thinking of rigging up a manual switch to bypass during cranking to see if it helps. Will report back if it works. Just wondered if anyone had tried this. The fact that Mercedes added it on later cars suggests it should help.

Hi,
You can use a relay to bypass the ballast when cranking, or:
If you upgrade to a later higher HP starter, the solenoid has an extra terminal which is 'hot' when cranking. You can run a wire from there to bypass the ballast.

Hi Paul. A fairly simple way to get a ballast bypass would be to use a relay operated by the starter solenoid circuit. Oh, while I was typing this, Naj beat me to it. Cheers, Dale.
