it all got a bit carried away really as we started to uncover more and more as we went on so my original plan went out the window.
tart it up. drive it.
it was taken right back and then stripped of everything. some chrome went away but most got binned. anything rubber went.
i then flew to Stuttgart to chill and chat with KHM which was lovely to sit and mull over what to do. the guy is lovely and had some great ideas for me. i decided to go with a full leather interior but picked something from the same era and the carpet as well.

for the paint i elected to stay with the original colours but got a shock later. i didnt like the original particularly and that was my doubt, it was a very yellow beige and not appealing. when they went to paint it the guy called me to say they had an issue that the paint colour was very different but he was sure he had the right 181 beige. when i saw it, it was way way nicer so at some point the car i think had been painted a random beige and not mercedes. it was like NHS instead. when done i loved the new colour.

Great result Russell,
I just love the colour combination - the UK cars seemed to get the best of them in my opinion ....but l am biased. (They must have been up to some funny stuff around that decade).
Happy to hear you stuck with the original.

You've inspired me to crack the whip on my project car - body work has stopped for months ( "...but you said you weren't in a hurry"). Engine work, Chrome, Plating, Mechanical items going OK.

Cheers

the guy in germany at KMH Rob was lovely and we sat and chatted a lot about what to do over several coffees. his advice was "if it isnt the first of anything, isnt the last of anything, or wasnt on a race track or on a rally then forget original.
it doesnt matter  a hoot what you do as a total minter in a different colour, will always be a total minter.
but..
he did say that it is better to stay with something that was "of the period" so dont go paint a 230 in a 280 colour. you can but...

i followed this and ended up using the original outside car colours but changed the interior to a better matching one than the dark brown tex and went a lighter colour leather and a contrast but followed him and picked leathers that were actually an option for the period.

another interesting comment i didnt forget though. he said with small cars you can contrast all over the place with wheels, roof, carpet, door panels dash however you might feel and small cars carry it off. something they learnt years ago at MB it doesnt work with a bigger car so the factory tended to go same colour out then whatever colour in, but all the same ie all black out, all red in, all blue out, all blue in.
rarely ever mix.
anything different they tried, never sold and dealers didnt want them.

where as pagodas could come like Josephs coat and they got lapped up
russell

an interesting guy, an interesting place. anyone after a new interior i strongly suggest a short trip.

Yes Russell - I agree with that.

When I bought mine (from the UK) it had parchment interior that was in the wrong texture leather. When I got around to redoing it - I realised the original interior was actually Blue MBTex but parchment looked so much nicer so I had it re-trimmed in Parchment leather. The exterior colours are all original.

On my project car I am happy with the original colours inside and out but I am going with a white steering wheel.

Cheers

Russell that's good advice. I'm in the process of painting my car. (doing the work myself). Ive already painted engine compartment and engine is back in the car. the original color is light Ivory. And thats what I was going to go with. Howver ive never really liked the color but now the engine is back in the car. I actually want to paint it black. Its a 1970 280sl. your thoughts on if the rest of the car is black but the engine compartment is light Ivory?

not sure that would work, it wouldnt have been normal.
280 sl in black is a nice thing and very original as a colour but not with an ivory engine bay. that would stand out very odd.
i might be wrong but pretty much most are matching engine bay to body unless changed later and i would guess if not the same then the engine bay got sprayed black.
some might correct me here but my best guess.

for the sake of the car and value i would now go ivory for the body or bite the bullet and change the bay to black. a royal pain but when done would be far more acceptable.

my pagoda is the first car i have owned on about 30 years that isnt black so i am with you in your thought process but maybe ivory is a great pagoda colour you know

Im still debating what to do. I have two I'm working on a 69 with my brother and a 70 of my own. the 69 is Olive green. im part way into the paint process for that and Ill see how it turns out. Yest the incorrect engine bay is not right so if I go black I can pull the engine again (actually for the third time). Its not as difficult as it looks a weekend to do it. and I did originally paint the engine bay black then went to ivory. anyway I dont always think straight.  But you have a wonderful car. I hope my paint turns out at least half as good. Im still on the fix dents stage. No major metal work to do except for one panel i need to mig weld a 2x2 inch spot on the 69.
