The tragi-comedic reality here is that some of what they parodied is very close to the truth. For example, these large batteries found in hybrids are generally made up of many hundreds of small cells.

cells in the battery have failed and thus the
battery as a whole is now insufficient to use. There are a few firms out there that "rebuild" or "refurbish" these hybrid batteries, and they do it by replacing the defective cells. While they aren't AA cells as in the parody, note in the link above that SOME are D-cells!
