I wonder what a hole between the ignition key and the cigarlighter is for? It is there in my car, but I have not seen it in any other, and the people I ask,do not know.
But now I have seen it in an article about the heater, with a red button, see the picture.

I think that is an alarm indicator. Clifford make alarms I think.

A quick search found that Clifford brand is still active although now a part of a company called Directed (which is partially owned by Trivest)

Some may have a hole but it would have been added sometime in the cars life. For perhaps additional fog lamps or alarm lamp. There were no holes from the factory.

Depends on where the alarm indicator light is most visible.
This is not a button, but the flashing red light to warm would-be-thieves that the car is fitted with an alarm system.
You probably will find a black box with a tangle of thin wires underneath the dash somewhere.
Would also include the remote receiver wire, motion sensor, horn assembly in the engine bay, wires for the ignition key, flasher, door ajar switch and possibly wires to a relay for flashing your driving lights.

Ok, grreat. I have been under there, working on the heater levers and core, but I have not recognised any stuff like that.

If you can follow the wires from the light and find the alarm box you would be wise to remove it.  In my years as a professional mechanic I have seen a few old alarms fail leaving the owner stranded or worse sounding the alarm until the car battery dies.  Besides the electronics being vulnerable the quality of wiring for the alarm at least here in the US is usually pretty poor. 

At some point one of the factory wires going to the ignition coil will be cut and spliced into the alarm wiring you will need to find this and re-connect it to itself.  I highly recommend soldering the wires back together.

I think the OP picture was a reference only. He got the picture from another thread about heater controls. He only has the hole. No light or button. So there may not be anything to trace out.
