Air conditioner question

I'm not sure if this is a dealer installed type or after market air conditioner.
1970 280SL/8 W113 101624 miles.

That appears to be a Frigiking dealer installed A/C.

It's coming out and will not be put back in. When they installed this the mechanics removed the 4 climate control levers and disabled any way of getting heat in the car.

Try moving the main water valve. It is under the hood, beneath the rubber plug on the top of the firewall.

they most likely didn't remove the levers but rather the levers simply vaporized.  They are made of some funky plastic (Celluloid?) and they tend to fall apart.  All that was left of mine when I got my car was some white ash like powder on the carpet.  The system if intact has become quite valuable so I would treat it carefully and either store it properly or sell it to someone else.

Here is a photo of the area that Ja17 referred to and I'm not sure if this unit to the left of the firewall holes is the valve he is talking about.

The valve is visible if you look down into the upper firewall hole.  you should be able to see the cable going into a lever with a screw on top.  See if you can pry the lever back and forth.  Don't go crazy tring to get it to move.  Much better to take it apart and free it up than destroy it.

The unit to the left of the holes is the neutral safety switch witch is used to keep the car from starting unless it is in Park or Neutral.

Your AC looks identical to the Kuhlmeister unit installed on my 67 250 SL by the dealer when it was originally purchased in January of 1968.  I know some units that looked identical were labeled Frigiking which I think was the company that actually manufactured the Kuhlmeister AC unit.  I just had my AC completely reworked and had a new sanden compressor and new condenser installed (I kept all the old parts).  Since I'm in Florida this is a must have item for summer driving along with the hardtop.  I would be reluctant to remove the AC as it is a value enhancer.  It's amazing, down here we put the tops up in the summer and down in the winter, different strokes for different folks.

My wife Nancy really needs air in the summer, ton of allergies.
