Exhaust end-to-end
« on: May 26, 2016, 16:33:49 »
As I have just mounted a new, original type M-B mild steel exhaust system, ordered from M-B (manufacturer Gillet) I share some pictures.
The system from factory, back in the sixties, was welded in all joints. They had a jig to place the whole length system in to enable this welding job of course.

Today, one must lift the system up, spot weld, bring down, weld fully etc. many times in order to obtain a good fit. I painted with flat black heat resistant paint, spray bottle.

Looks nice Hans. Is the reason you went with a stock rather than stainless steel system originality?

A PO had mounted a stainless, so that was on the SL as I aquired it.
Gave the car a terrible sound when driving, it also had a bad fit, so that just had to go.

I much enjoy this original type system now, including the sound :).

I replaced the mild steel exhaust on my Triumph TR6 (I used to be into British cars) with a stainless system and regretted it ever since - it completely ruined the fruity, raspy exhaust note...

Hans,

looks really nice.   Are these typically painted black?  Since you are such a purist (originalist), you would know.

(By the way - very nice tool kit from your other post)

best,

Yes, nice job Hans. It is a lot of work to set-up a correctly welded-up system. I see you have your two connector pipes on correctly. Many of the cars have them installed backwards these days. Everyone notice that the long straight section of the connector pipes is positioned to the FRONT of the car. In this way the rear tire has about an inch of clearance from the exhaust. Many installations have the long straight installed incorrectly toward the rear of the car and the tire clearance becomes very close.  Hans make sure to have the emergency brake cable hung above the rear muffler. If it is in contact it will be damaged. There issuposed to be a small rubber hangar for it to keep it safely above.

Well done Hans!
The rubber O-ring that Joe is writing about is attached to a spring washer with a hook. I am looking for this part - #146 in the picture - and believe I saw an offer for a reproduction but cannot find it anymore. Who can help?
