I had my old one re-cored. Cost around $350.00 or so in Chicago.

I just had mine re cored also at $400.  I called around and found a used one that was supposedly reconditioned and they wanted $1495.  By the way it was ADSIT that had the used radiator.  Their on line price was $1345 and when I called the price was $1495.  I had my original re-cored instead.  If you do find a used one you will probably have to get it re-cored anyway.  Make sure it is for the correct transmission in your car.  The automatic has a trans cooler.

I just had my radiator recored for my 1966 230SL with the correct radiator core for $500.00. That's the only way to go.

Especially since you are in Maine you should visit Gernold.   He's one of the experts on these cars and has a particularly good reputation specifically for radiators.   You will read a lot more about radiators and Gernold on this forum.

Here is Gernold's website link to the radiators he supplies:  http://www.sltechw113.com/parts.html

As long as your upper and lower tanks are OK you can get it cored as many times as you like. Is there something wrong with yours?

I purchased a recored unit from Gernold on exchange in 2011.

Typically, when you go to a "local" radiator shop in your area, where ever that may be, the shop will use/order standardized radiator cores they purchase and solder the unit back together. That's why sometimes when you see a recored radiator on an older or import car [in the US] it doesn't always look correct.

What Gernold told me is that he found a place, I think it was in Maine, where the firm had the equipment to actually manufacture the cores--you know, bend the fins, create the tubes, etc. So, Gernold came up with the sizing and capacity specs and has the cores made for him specifically for the Pagoda radiators.

My recored unit from Gernold worked perfectly from the moment it was installed. Surely this isn't the only workable solution but those who know Gernold know he has extremely high standards.

The Mercedes Benz Classic Center in Irvine, Ca. last February quoted me $945.00 dollars (with MBCoA discount included) for a brand spanking new radiator for my 1970 280SL... If they still have them available I would go with a factory unit for added peace of mind...
Greetings from sunny Mexico!

Mine has been recored a few times while the car was in Florida  it looks like the tanks have had  some rough treatment  they are dented and just don't instill a Proper quality with me.

Yes I need down to visit  Gernald  he did return my call and I am eager to meet him from what I have seen he is very well regarded. He's not to far from Bangor.

The radiator for a manual 230SL is also available from the parts manufacturer in Poland:

Agree with Michael, Gernold is the best way to go (not only in radiators)
