107 bundt wheels on my 113 ?
« on: July 08, 2016, 18:47:06 »
I have a nice set of 4 Bundt rims from a 1983 280 SL. My 250 SL is needing new tires and I was wondering if the Bundts and Lug bolts will fit the 1967 250 SL.
I was amazed how much lighter the Bundt rim is over the steel rim. The Bundt seemed half as heavy. I'll bet I would reduce the un-sprung weight of the car by 100 lbs with the Bundts.

Would that weight savings translate into significantly better handling/ride, or not really ?
If there is a significant improvement I would install the bundts for a new look. I know they were not original on my 250 SL.

Also, I tried to remove a wheel to fit a bundt but the lugs on my steelies frozen. I could not loosen even with a 3 ft breaker bar so I couldn't test the fit of the bundts. I will start soaking the lugs with penetrating oil.
any info is appreciated.
thanks

You will need different lug bolts.  May be wrong, but I believe the Bundts will take a longer bolt.

I'll bet I would reduce the un-sprung weight of the car by 100 lbs with the Bundts.
Zak,
You would loose that bet. I have the 5.5 inch wide aluminum wheels from an 80's MB, the one that is painted black, with white stripes, that looks like a steel wheel and uses the full hub cap.
These are lighter than Bundts, and, if I remember correctly, it is 10 lbs per wheel lighter, or 40 lbs savings total. So, something less than 40 lbs reduction for Bundts for the total car.
But, I can assure you I can feel the difference.
Quicker off the line (less rotational mass), more nimble turn in (less gyroscopic effect), and better on the bumps (less unsprung weight).
I don't know why everyone always focuses on the unsprung weight and doesn't mention the other too.
They are all significant.
Have fun !!!

AFAIK Bundts use a different bolt than steel wheels. This is what I found out from the Classic Center about my Bundts.

Yes, the lug bolts for Bundt Cakes are longer, approximately 5 mm longer.

And if you keep your spare as a steel, remember to keep a set of the shorter steel wheel bolts with it. Fitting a steel wheel with the bolts that held your alloy on will apparently be OK, until you drive off!

Thank you for all the replies.
Sorry I was not clear on my question about bundt wheel fit. I have the bundt lug bolts that came with the bundt rims from the 107.
My question was: Will  these wheels and lug bolts fit the 113?

The Bundt wheels will fit the W113.
I have mounted 15" Bundt wheels on my car they fit as well. They where an option on the W126 in Europe.
Yes, make sure you have a set of short bolts with you if your spare is steel.

If they are 108 400 10 02 then they will fit. If you are sure they are from a 107 they will fit. other Bundts for different models have a different offset and may or may not fit but messing with your offset if you don't know what you are doing could ruin your ride/handling.

I have just out a set on my car from the 107 and they fit perfect... With the longer lugs.
The ride and handling differences is actually - really - noticeable ..
Plus it makes the 113 look more sporty!  No to mention that most humans on the planet have never seen an Alloy wheel in 14"😜
