Any Porsche owners here?
« on: July 17, 2016, 01:59:35 »
First, odd as it may seem, my daily driver is a much loved '64 VW Deluxe Bus that is finally getting the restoration it deserves. Though we've owned our Pagoda since 1992, it has always shared garage space with German cousins. I started with BMW coupes 35 years ago and have owned several; currently we have two, including a '72 3.0CSL I've owned longer than any other car. And not long after the 280SL Purchase, I got the first of several Porsches, a rare '62 356S hardtop coupe. I found a '68 911 Targa for my wife's Xmas gift in '95, and a couple years later she insisted I get my own... my birthday being 9/11 after all. A warehoused '67 911S that hadn't turned a wheel in 30 years was purchased in 2008, then a '68 911R (tribute) for vintage racing. Traded that plus $$$ for a Brumos 914/6GT to go historic (since sold) and yet another GT that awaits restoration. It's a good habit in some respects... we justify it as being responsible recyclers, as these are our only cars and used as daily transportation. It's a lifestyle choice we recognize isn't normal, but does anyone else share the oil-cooled sickness?

Both of these cars provided tremendous fun but are now with new owners... a rather expensive hobby that took time and money from other projects. The Daytona class winning Bob Hindson #42 911 was a friend's, generously allowing me to drive it a few events.

After completing two restorations currently underway in my shop, I'll get back to vintage/historic but on a much leaner budget.

I'm also currently deciding between a 2016 Jag F-type R and a 2014 Carerra 4s for sale out by Iconic. The Jag is much less common but the 911 seems to ride much better. My intent is to use it for a daily driver 8 months out of the year.

Go for the Porsche. I use my 2014 4S Cab as a daily driver all year - had it delivered with snow tires! Perfect everyday car that will, with the press of the 'SPORT' button, transform itself into a brilliantly handling, perfectly balanced sports car. AND it has a low 'douche factor' (Vanity Fair term).

Wow, Bullethead,
What an impressive collection of cars, Porsches and BMWs ... ! 8) 8)
Clearly too few Mercedesses, but anyway ... ;)

Would love having an old 911 too but with a garage space full of old&shabby Mercedesses there is no "capacity" for a 911 anymore. And prices are ridiculous today .... ;)
The disadvantage of late birth here ....

I realize that the 4-cylinder 912 is much more common in the US than it was/is in Europe.

I know, i know, it's a sacrilege,
but how hard is it to convert a 912 into a (real  ;) ) 911 ?
Engine for sure, maybe gearbox. And some more suspension bits??.
But what else? Is it possible?
Hard to come by real 911 donor VINs, is it??  ;) :D :o 8) ???

It appears to me as if there are "so many" really nice 912's around, they look so nice classy
(like an early 911 F model), highly adorable;
too sad that these are no real 911's .... :D ;D
Not to annoy any of your 4-cylinder owners...
Was just thinking & dreaming ....
 :D

Well Achim ... Don't forget that a 912 short wheel base ( pre 1968 )  was a way better handling car than a SWB 911 .

And yes a lot of 912 where converted to so-called 912/6 , but that's is always seen as a sort of fake 911 and will never get the appreciation that a original 911 or a original 912 get for that matter.
So keep it original I say ..... Or go the Singer route yes !!  Love the singer.
