Moss Green, Anyone?
« on: November 06, 2004, 09:18:32 »
Some of you may remember my quest for a Moss Green 280SL. I have owned several Pagodas, and currently own one of the very last 280SL's made. But I have been long-bitten by the Moss Green bug. Years ago, the first 280 I wanted to buy was Moss Green, and I have been unable to completely get over it. While I like my Metallic Red/ Black, and it is a great car with phenomenal ownership and documented history, etc, I really want a Moss car.

I will not consider a car with rust, or wreck damage, but anything else will be considered. I would really appreciate any leads.

My neighbor has had a green one for as long as I can remember. He's a collector. Give me the MB color code you want and I'll check. Yesterday I went over to my neighbor and he showed me all the receipts of his car going back to the original sales sticker. It is indeed "Moss green metallic". Everything is original, but then he doesn't drive the car much. Never been repainted, receipts for everything. Rare 4-speed. He's a real collector, almost like a museum.I tried to have him come to our get-together last Saturday in Issaquah. He would have stolen the show. Must be a late model because he has transistorized ignition.

Roy Spencer www.oursl.com has a 1968 Moss Green listed for $25,000.00 The car is located in Maine.  The seller states"rebuilt from the ground up" $30K but it still needs some work to bring it up to its full glory.

Hatch & Sons has a moss green 280SL with a stick-shift for sale. They claim $100K spent on the restoration:

I called about the Hatch car and it is not a fresh restoration.  I believe the price for that car is $69K.  The interior is original.  This was one point they stressed "The original cognac can not be duplicated" is this true?

They currently are offering 3 Pagodas and none of them are fresh restoations.  "It isn't ecnomically feasible for us to restore these cars.  The market just isn't there."

Why would one want to replace that original interior?  The seats are beautifully preserved, with just the right patina for a 30+ year old car.  You couldn't match the originality of such an interior, even if all the right color bits are available.  Sometimes the best and most sympathetic restoration is obtained when one retains as much original material as possible.

On an old Rolls Royce, the value is totally destroyed if the original leather is replaced.  One can repaint, replate, and refinish wood on those cars, but one never replaces even a panel of the leather trim unless it is totally beyond saving!

Which green is it? If you want the british racing green I, know A 1971 with tan leather in LA my friend has, which was frame off restoration years back by the same one man shop that did my car in NY. My friend was thinking of selling it this summer when I, changed his mind! "IF YOU DO NOT NEED THE MONEY WHY SELL?"

If you think you want a good shop I, can recomend but you have to hold their hands.

Thanks for the ideas.  The specific color is DB 834 "Moss Green Metallic".

I had seen the ads for the Hatch car, but obviously that car is at the top of the market, and I am just an enthusiast.  I also am aware of the car in Maine; it has been advertised for mid-$20's for some time.  I don't know any specifics, but I wonder about rust in a northern car, and it looks a little "tatty" for that kind of money.

I would not mind a tatty car, but it must be priced accordingly.

The car I have is a great car: 7th to last 280 made, rust and wreck-free, purchased from original owner last year.  The car has 80K miles, and owner had spent $30+K on mechanical and cosmetic freshening over the last couple of years.  When I bought it, it just needed a few details sorted, and a complete detailing.  Very nice car now, but the color just does not do it for me.

If I had a chance to trade for a comparable Moss car, I would in a minute.  If I could pick up a solid Moss driver to do a "rolling restoration" that would be OK.

Keep the ideas coming.

What do the color specialists think? Hatch says its car is a 384 moss green - which of course doesn't exist, implying a typo and 834 moss green metallic, but the car doesn't look metallic, it looks like 226 moss green solid, which itself is a nice color.....

Jeff,
I know the car.  Too many corrosion issues for me, but a pretty car.  If you would not mind sharing with me what you paid, I would really like to know.  I know what Sam had in he car, and I will gladly share that with you.   Email me.

Here is my 69 280 SL, 113 044 12 00 7422, 834 Moss Green metallic (re sprayed 2 years ago by previous owner). When I had it inspected for the insurance the inspector claimed that it should not have been metallic. He said that metallic was not used until on later models than this one. Anybody know if this is true?

If the data plate under your hood and your data card both show 834, then I guess your car was originally moss green metallic.  Rely on your documentation.

My '67 was 834, body and hardtop, now 502 winerot or burgandy, so your inspector seems to be wrong.

The moss green ebay car seems to come and go.  It has been listed at least twice.  I remember this car because I noticed it hadn't been washed and you could see all the dust on the car.  This car also had wide white wall tires that set it apart from others.

That eBay car sure is a nice colour combo. I believe it IS the correct Moss green, the other car here is quite a bit darker. I have a few photos somewhere I took of similar colour cars I'll try to post later.
