Codes 524 and 667
« on: August 06, 2016, 20:59:48 »
Hi,

I've just decoded my datacard. Thanks to the tech manual it was a breeze! It's a fantastic source of information.

Two of my codes are:

524 Lackkonservierung.
667 Verpackungsart V2, VE2 für Schifftransport. (Found this on another site, but do not know if it's correct)

Does anyone know if the "Lackkonservierung" was a general treatment to protect the car, or if it was only to protect it during transport?

Thanks Dieter,

I found some additional information for 524: "Fahrzeuge wurden für Schiffstransport mit Cosmolin-Wachs besprüht."

In my days studying at University, I worked in the local harbour driving new cars off ships. They drove a VW bus onboard the ship, you grabbed a car, drove it to the parking lot and went back into VW bus again. Repeat 1000 times. Best job I ever had, but also the prime reason I try to get factory delivery when buying a new car.. That's where I learned how to move a car sideways out of a parking lot only using the throttle and handbrake. This is a party trick only to be used for moving new cars on a ship :)

The cars were covered in thick goo. Was this possibly the "Cosmolin-Wachs", later removed by the dealership?

Hi Mike,

Funny you should mention this, as a student in Germany in 1956 one of my temp jobs was at the The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia factory driving the lower section (lower floor assembly, motor and wheels) of the sports car (2+2 coupe) from the railroad cars into the parking holding area before they were moved to the final assembly area. I don't think we managed anywhere close to a 1000 during one shift, since after we got one off the railroad car a lot of pushing was called for..

However, like yourself we had fun doing it. It was actually fun going to work, more like an excercise after sitting in classes for hours.

I never liked that little car. I got spoiled during my next job (small business) the owner my boss let me wash his Benz on Saturdays driving that car out from the garage and back in after washing was the highlight of my week. Only later once I immigrated to Canada in the 60s a Pagoda catches my eye. I never could afford one way back then, only once I retired I was lucky to find one in great condition.

I now try to enjoy her as often as I can for time stands sill for no one :)

Happy Motoring,

Cheers, Dieter
