Question on spare wheel position?
« on: August 15, 2016, 23:09:04 »
Greeting to everyone, I haven't posted to the forum for a while but I noticed this car newly listed here in Australia and other than the fact that it would have to be one of the dearer cars listed I found it odd that it had the spare wheel in the early position for such a late car.

Does this look right to others?

Thats a 230sl body with a 280 engine and badging. The vin states its a 230 but someone changed the 3 to an 8. Ha
Wouldnt trust that as far as I could throw it. The vin plate is held in with drywall screws!

No!!!!
The spare tire position is early 230SL. One of the pictures show the vin tag with a 230SL vin 113 042 22 003633 yet the tag appears to say 280SL. This leads me to think there has been some foul play in this car's history.
The engine shot looks like it has the later 280SL master cylinder and the valve cover has the later revised casting that came out in 1965.
It could be a combination of 2 cars a mesh of 230 and 280SL.
Buyer beware.

Sure looks like there is a error here.  That would be called a fraud if known by the current owner so I sent them a message pointing out the problem.  Will be interesting if it remains there for sale.

Maybe it was changed later but I see where it says that it is a 230SL with 280SL drive train. While I wouldn't pay that much for it, I wouldn't turn my nose up at it either. By VIN it's a 230SL. Not so easy to say what it is now.

My car is a 230SL with 250SE engine and rear ( disc brake ) axle. What do I have? ;D

I see the owner has now corrected up the description noting that it started life as a 230SL.  Fessed up.

Good job Garry. The potential new owner thanks you. Even if they dont know it. If there was no gripe on the sellers end im pretty sure they knew about it. Or just forgot.
