Retractable Seatbelts
« on: November 08, 2004, 14:24:38 »
My car has the original factory seatbelts, but I've seen many restored cars with new retractable seat belts installed.  Do any of you have personal experience with these?  Are they safe?  Who sells them?

Thanks.

Joe,

Got mine from Pagodeteile in Germany, total cost incl delivery in UK £ 175.
Very easy to fit but some problems in daily use ----> see my reply in Malc's post "Seatbelt Question" !
Currently awaiting seatbelt guide part from local MB dealer.

Hello Ouzo,

I had the retractables installed when the car was restored.  The ones I had installed were original MB seat belts, and they were installed according to a Mercedes Benz Technical Bulletin issued in the mid 1970's.  It is not an easy install: there was drilling and welding into the body, and the chrome cap that the soft top mechanism pokes through needed to be modified and then re-chrome plated.

I love them; I would not own a vehicle without them--I just don't feel safe unless restrained--but that's me.  Others of course don't wear any seat belts and some go motorcycling w/o a helmet--it's personal preference.

Since it was a retrofit, there are bound to be a couple of snags.  I found 2.

1)  The belt tension is strong; yesterday as I drove my car to its winter resting place my left shoulder was actually sore.  This could easily be cured with one of those aftermarket pads.  Lots of other seatbelts fall into that category which is why they make those pads in the first place.

2)  The latch mechanism is on a long "wire", and this does have a tendency to hit and thus scratch the center console wood.

The problem that some others seem to have is the fact that without a B pillar, the belt comes from below.  Since I am only 5'8" this isn't an issue for me, but for those taller it might be a problem.

Do you have any photos of this seatbelt installation you could share?

Thanks.

Ed and others,

My car is put to bed for the winter.  However I did find a couple of interior shots that might show you how it all works.  However, they are something like 1MB files; when I try to get them down to the 80K file limit of this site, they are useless to look at.

Gents,

If this works, here are two photos of the seat belt installation.  This is the "factory authorized" version done to MB specs based upon their technical bulletin, and uses sedan belts.  One photo is of the belt in use (sans human) and the other is the mounting point on the non existent B pillar, under the chrome cap.  I hope this gives everyone an idea.

The installation requires cutting, drilling and welding to secure the anchor points etc.

Those astute observers will also note the fire extinguisher of recent posts mounted behind the seat; it is just "stuck" to the carpet and does not move.

Mike,
It's interesting that the MB spec installation does not use the factory supplied and threaded hole located in the small triangular space, just below where your seat belt is mounted.  I think I have that bulletin, I will have to look at it again!  I do recall that it involved cutting, inserting a support plate, and welding.

or cut here are some pics of another
way of installation using the orginal
seat belt anchorpoints on b-post & tunnel.

Hi Guys,

There is a ton of info our there on this subject, because I searched it last spring when I wanted to get rid of my Kongols.  In addition there is a wealth of advice on this site using the Search button.

Gernold did my seatbelt installation and it turned out great.  I feel safer especially if I have one of my kids with me.

This is exactly what I would like to do.  Now, if I could just stop spending money on the house (paint, curtains, patio, etc.) and start spending it on the Pagoda!!
