What is the correct color on the splash plates/guards in the front wheel wells, black or body color?

These were painted in body colour at the factory, as was the rest of the wheel well area. However, oftentimes the dealer or first owner applied black tar underbody protection in this area.

PS. A note here, on "/8" W114/W115 cars from 1968 onwards, the splash plates were black from factory.  DS

Thanks Hans, then my assumption was right. We had a little discussion here about that. But the plates on my car was green around the edges so it must have been painted separately, and since the car is pretty unmolested I doubt they ever have been removed.

Yup.  Stone guarded lightly and painted body color off the car so screws and rubber seal will be natural with no paint.

Picture from the Motoring Investments "Holy Grail" original low mileage car. Notice the screws are not painted.
