Voltage Regulator 1963 230SL
« on: October 03, 2016, 15:37:13 »
Greetings All
It appears that the Voltage Regulator on my 230SL has given up and needs to be replaced.  With the vehicle running, the voltage jumps up and down, sometimes reading the battery voltage, and other times jumping up to 15 volts.  In looking at various site and catalogs, there appears to be two options for replacement parts.  The first is the Bosch part, and the second is the Beru part.  Prices vary as you would expect.  According to one site, one difference between the two parts is the Bosch part having an internal ballast resistor, and the Beru does not.  Does anyone have experience with this and what are the general thoughts?
Thanks, Roy

Hi Roy.  This may be of interest. Bosch Australia made a direct replacement electronic regulator, model RE55. It is in a die cast, slightly finned case,  and although it doesn't look quite original, it blends well with the engine bay. I've been running one for a few years now on my Pagoda and another car I have.
  Cheers,Dale.

Thanks for the feedback on the two regulators.
I decided to go with the Original Equipment Bosch regulator.

I had the RE55 and had electrical issues. The voltage regulator looked like it had melted. I'm not sure whether the voltage regulator was the problem or was damaged by the problem.  I replaced it with the Beru regulator.
