1969 280SE Cabriolet - Current Value

A friend has W111 1969 280SE high grille cabriolet which he offered to sell to me. Original panels, engine, transmission. Original owner 1970>>.
The car has low original 72K km runs nicely, but has rust and paint issues. The car was previously painted (looks like brush work), so most likely would need complete strip down.
Rust in common places (fenders, front rockers, some floors, quarter panel ends). Interior is tired.

The real question is, in the current condition - considering it is a driver-level car, what do you believe this car is worth? I mean, not the show cars that sit in showrooms indefinitely, but a reasonably priced driver-level car to go. I scoured ebay and few other sites without much luck. Any input is very much appreciated.

I have a 69 111 convertible driver.
They are wonderful cars. The rust repair could be a killer.

Is it a low grill or a high grill? Something tells me that the low grill cars are worth more since they're more rare.

 Any 111 cab is worth restoring and are worth at least twice as much as a coupe. If it was a complete basket case, only a 3.5 would fall into '' do it anyway.''

with out seeing it , it's hard to tell
take it to a reputable restoration shop
see what they say and get back to us!
don't be surprised opening estimate to be $15 to $20K
but
if you start with re-chrome , etc it will be much higher

So I took a closer look today.

Bad: the car needs both fenders and hood replaced, due to various issues. The front bumper support is rusted out. Inner fenders were patched at some point and would need at least rework, so out goes the front end. Paint is terrible. Carpets need replacing, so does the windshield seal. A/C and dash clock not working. Steering wheel, stereo and wheels not original.

Good: Floors, rockers and trunk are surprisingly solid, no issues. Engine and the mechanics was sorted out couple of years ago, in excess of $11K.

In a conservative estimate, I would need about $20-25K to sort the issues listed above properly.

With so much upfront being wrong, Hagerty estimate of Fair condition seems overly optimistic.

I have a w111 Cab and regularly look at ones up for sale.

if the car drives it would never be up for sale for 60k USD.

Beverley Hills Car Club recently had some "basket case" Cabs and they wanted 45k USD as a minimum - that got you an early 220 with no floors and they have sold.

In Europe you would not get anything advertised on the regular channels that isn't completely rotten for 60k USD. In fact I can only find one car on Mobile.de which is under 67k euros and this is a 220.

I saw this car. The owner's expectations on price are unrealistic. It has been for sale for many years and no takers. This car needs a professional fix the rust issues. Unfortunately the car was driven in the winter so rockers and the floor are hidden issues unless you get the car up on a hoist

I love the 111 cars. Great to drive around. I just finished doing interior and some paint work. Lots of leather and costs $$$$.
Treated floors and painted from the doors back. I had already repainted the front of the car 10 years ago. Easy to match black.
I still need to do the dash and door panels. I couldn't imagine the cost to restore one of these cars.
I purchased a good driver in 2003 and have enjoyed it and improved it as needed.

Could you do me a massive favour and send me a couple of decent photos of the wooden surround which goes up the sides and over the top of the windshield?

Mine did not have these fitted when I bought it so I bought a pair for a coupe which I will need to modify to fit around the rear view mirror and sun visors.

I would appreciate the help enormously.

Thanks for replying, the pictures are great quality but those parts are identical on Coupe/Cabriolet.

I mean the wooden pieces above - at head height whilst driving if that makes sense.

The 69 280SE has wood on each side of the windshield posts and across the top on each side of the mirror there is vinyl- No Wood...

Thanks again David. The pictures are very clear. That might have to be the look I go for even if it is not strictly correct for a 63 car. It would be easy to replicate with the Coupe pieces I have.

So I took the car to a hoist. As Doug said earlier, the car is so badly rusted underneath. Previous repairs done improperly. A lot of bondo.
So many things wrong.

The car is a candidate for a full restoration. I walked away.

I fell head first into that hole some years ago. After buying too many project cars, I found that I had all of my cars apart and nothing that could be driven. I walk away from a lot of '' deals '' these days.  :)
