Chrome exhaust tip ends, square vs. round
« on: October 11, 2016, 23:10:34 »
I've heard references to square section exhaust tip ends.
Does this mean the "bead" at the end of the chrome tip has a square cross section?
Mine have a round cross section.

Did Pagodas have a square cross section?
All Pagodas?
Maybe just the early ones???

I'm told that the original (as delivered) OEM models had the square bead at the end of the chrome. The replacements, whether OEM from Mercedes-Benz or reproduction, have a rounded bead. I don't know if all (230-280 throughout production) were originally delivered with square...maybe others can help out.

Thanks Michael.
That helps for part of the question.
As you said, maybe others can help out.

Well, Michael, John, and Joe, I'd have to say that question is now answered !!!
Thanks guys, and have a great fall.
I will take that as 100% fact, and I've learned something new.
I have never seen one of those and I hope to some day.
If anyone has a picture of the square cross section original tail pipe chrome tips, it would be great if you could post it !!
Thanks,
Mark

I think the replacements changed to the round beads a long time ago. I scored a set of four from Australia with the squared edged a couple of years ago. I also got one from Argentina in the original package. I have been on the lookout since then through ebay and have seen nothing.

Perhaps because, in the same way Scoot scooped up all the aluminum wheels you've done the same for square-bead exhaust tips!  ;D

Bumping this to the top.  Would love to see comparison pics of the two.  Does anyone have this?

I'm so glad this discussion got started up again and THANK YOU to Jonny B for the picture !!!
I wish that part was still available today.
To my eyes, it is a thing of beauty and so cool !!   8)
Now, I'll ask again as I did at the beginning of this string:
"Was the square cross section exhaust tip original equipment on all of the production Pagodas from '63 to '71??

Wow, Mark R. was talking about that at PUB last year and I have seen many of what I thought were original Pagodas and never seen a exhaust lip tip like that so I was sure it was non- stock. Mark you were correct and a Jedi of Pagoda nuances and now wish I had a set , so much nicer that my rounded tips.  One more thing on my list of what I am searching for.

To answer Mark's question more specifically.

It is my understanding that the square edged tips were on all the 113 cars (and I believe on the other MB cars of the same period). I happened on a used square tip a year or better ago, but it was slightly larger than the Pagoda tip. I gave that to my good friend Bob Gunthorp, as I figured he might find a better home for it

It seems like you could roll them between two bearings one inside and one outside.  that would cause the front and rear face to square up.  It wouldn't bee too hard to make a tool.
