Where does the stone guard / body schutz end?
« on: November 02, 2016, 12:07:01 »
Hi,

Tried reading a lot of threads but didn't find anything conclusive.

The Stone Guard / Chip Guard / Body Schutz is about to be applied to underside of my car and I would like to know where it ends. Specifically, is it applied to the flat section on the rear wheel arch or just inside the wheel wells?

I had a look at my other car which is usually a reliable source of information but I noticed it has a line of body schutz on the rear panel behind the rear wheels which according to past posts is not correct - see attached photo. Hence, I cannot use my other car as a reliable source.

I'm assuming it isn't applied to any exterior surfaces that receive finished paint (body colour). I did read the rocker sill covers did have a different texture - so I'm OK with that. I am also aware the wheel wells are painted body colour, etc.

Appreciate any information on where the line of body schutz should end.

Cheers

p.s - apologies for the crappy photo but I think you get the idea.

The entire wheel house is covered as well as the rim of the wheel opening. The factory used a stiff brush to swipe along the bottom edge of the inner wheel house which you can duplicate.
The bottom of the car was covered but not any of the mounted hardware which must have been installed afterwards.

Hi Dirk,

My panel guy used:  "Wurth" - 'Stone Chip and Corrosion Protection Aqua'   Art No.: 0890030

See attached before and after photos. It's black in colour whereas I believe the original was Tan. Not a big deal in my case as my car is dark in colour and the overspray will cover most of it.

Thank you Rob
I have seen several members recommend the Wuerth stone guard. I would prefer a tan color as well, but it is what it is. Btw it’s always good to see a picture going along with the project. (I have about two to three month to go till I am at your stage.)
Thanks again

I used U-Pol Gravitex in white for the under floor and black for the wheel wells as my car is a dark color and any chips would be very noticeable in the white undercoat,

That's a nice coarse texture you achieved with the U-pol gravitex - looks very much like the original.

I think the texture my guy achieved is more like the original sill covers.

Thanks, that's good information. Did you spray it yourself? If so, what spay gun did you use?
(I have a generic Eastwood undercoating gun that I believe should work with any of the above)

Wurth has very good undercoating. I have used both the spray can and the kind you spray with a schutz gun http://www.shopwurthusa.com/wurthstorefront/Chemical-Product/Underbody/SKS-Stoneguard-Black-Winterproof-30-Fl-Oz/p/08900301

The schutz gun is the only way to get it rough like the factory. Spray cans are just too fine. They are meant more for rocker panels and stone chips. They used to have a beige a while back and what I coated my W111 with.
