Head Work

I'd like to know who I can trust to do a thorough, correct reconditioning on my 230 SL and 280 SE heads/valves. I will ship the assembled heads anywhere to get the job done right and not have to worry about someone who for instance, re-surfaces them unnecessarily as a matter of routine.

I've been given prices locally ranging from $300.00 to $2,000.00 by various machine shops and reconditioners. I'd like to know who is most respected and capable in this area.

You can certainly send your head to the Benz Dr. (Dan Caron)
He has parts heads and valves etc. and knows not to machine unless absolutely neccessary. He does these all the time and his prices are very reasonable. I know from experience, as he's worked on my cars.

I suspected as much. I was looking for an excuse to go visit the good Dr. anyway.

Thanks Ricardo!

Mikey, Dr. Benz will indeed fix you up with what you need, exactly as you specify.  Give him a call.  I did and he had my car for weeks this summer, and was able to do things to it that nobody else could or would, so he comes highly recommended.  He even won a damn prize with it!  As others have pointed out we do owe it to our regular contributors who give us their specialized knowledge for free, to pass along business when we can.  Here's your opportunity.  In fact, with the Red Rocket (Dan's own car) I think he's "fresh" on heads and has seen it all.

If you don't want to go to our neighbor to the north or want to go to an engine/head specialist, there are two that do nothing but engines and related for Mercedes (and other German cars)--these are Metric Motors in California, and Noel's in Florida.  Both are well experienced in Mercedes products, and Metric will even do an exchange for you, I'm sure.

My engine was rebuilt (not exchanged) with Metric, and they did a great job; ask Dr. Benz himself.  During the head work they discovered a crack and repaired that.  So you now have three sources.  All you need is a box (and a checkbook :D )

Good Luck!
